some of you might remember seeing this photo before...
well, last night, at the Virginia Press Association's annual awards ceremony, it was recognized as "Best in Show - Non-Daily Photography" for 2006!
i am so totally blown away right now. there are over 100 non-daily newspapers in the state. i estimate that there were well over 100,000 images published by these papers last year. and mine was picked as the best. after going through the galleries of all the submissions, i am at once thrilled, humbled, inspired, and motivated. there is such an incredible wealth of talent in this state, it is a real charge to find myself in this spot, especially not being yet two years into the game.
here is the actual image that was judged.
the thing that is so wild is that the embedded photos were blacked out for judging. so, in spite of seeing a nearly full-page photo with 4 black boxes down the side, and, in spite of being printed on cheap paper with cheap ink on an old printer, it was still able to hold its own.
what a buzz.
and, in addition to everyone else, my thanks to the dpc community for all the support, motivation, and cheering that i've gotten here. this place helped lay a lot of the foundation i've been building my career on, and i truly appreciate it! |

Lest you wonder, many of US are receiving quite an education from YOU, Skip. To say that you've inspired a few new people with cameras would be a SERIOUS understatement. Yours being one of the first I admired on this site, and always enjoy coming back to your portfolio.
There are many people who firmly believe that giving back to others is the surest way to guaruntee one's own future success, and you have definitely earned your just reward. Congratulations Mr. Rowland, and Godspeed... |

i gotta tell ya, i'm am still buzzing...honestly, i almost fell out when they called my name. if somebody had had a camera, they could have gotten an excellent entry for spinning ;-)
this really does go to show that anything--ANYTHING--is possible if you can commit to your dreams.

Congratulations Skip for the much deserved recognition on your fantastic shot!
I missed this thread earlier but saw it after your PM regarding the St. Augustine GTG. I just finished reading the accompanying story on your website also which makes this award that much better, especially considering the limitations that you and the newspaper are performing under. As I've mentioned before, I have really enjoyed all of your accounts as free lance photographer that you have shared with us. I hope that I haven't missed any like I almost missed this one. |

Skip, I think it goes to show how much can be achieved when you work as hard as you have, have the creativity and go-get-it personality that you have and are as talented as you are. And a people person too which really helps you get the shots you get.
I'm thrilled for you.
Any plans for a trip to London to reward yourself?
