I am planning to buy a remote release for my D400, i could find only two variants with almost the same price but one is a wired release and the other a wired one. Can anyone please tell me which one is better or are there any other similar stuff available

Remote for Digital Rebel - RC1
RC1
or

Canon Remote Switch RS-60E3

I would say buy both. To do night shots you will need the cable release. And the wireless comes in handy for those self portraits.

So the wireless will not work in dark?

Yes it will but it won't lock the shutter for the over 30 second shots.

Wired is dependable - works every time and you can lock it open for long exposure or multiple exposures until the card fills up. Wireless is great for range (you can get much farther from the camera), but it isn't "instant" and mine misfires pretty often. I'm with Rex though, both have their place and if you can have both, do!

Thanks rex for you quick info, Thanks Cindi for the details, i think both are needed.

I was going to recommend the remote timer, but I don't see the Rebels listed there. If perhaps it does work with the 400D, it is really nice to have.

On my 350D I can do bulb shots with the wireless remote just fine - one click to open and another to close.

What the wireless remote doesn't offer (which I think the wired one does) is separate "half press" control - it's just one button you press causing it to focus and fire in one go. Obviously you can focus it in advance and then use MF on the lens or C.Fn 4 to prevent it focusing when you take the shot.

Also to use the wireless remote it has to be in the "remote/self timer" mode which I find a little irritating, you pick the camera up and try to take a shot normally and nothing happens (because it's in self-timer mode). It also means you can't do continuous shooting with it.

I haven't bought a wired release yet.

I have both but use the wireless most. I do find uses for the wired though and having the option to half-button the wired is nice. I bought a el-cheapo wired off eBay and it works great. The wireless can be used in bulb mode, once to open and once to close the shutter. Another nice thing about using the wireless is when you are using bracket mode, it takes all three shots with just one press of the button. I use this feature a lot.

Edit: I found one like mine on eBay.

I'm making one of these this weekend.

I'll second that on the 300D at least the wireless remote works with bulb. One click for open, one click for closed.

The only annoyanced with the wireless remote (and it's not a huge one, but may be enough to eventually get both) is shooting from behind the camera. You have to crook your hand around to the front so the sensor receives the signal.

I'd say start with the wireless and get the wired only if you think you need it after.

For less than $10 shipped, I like my little eBay one.

And a note on using the wireless from behind the camera, I have found that the IR signal will bounce off walls and such when used from any angle. I used to do the "Curl the hand around" technique when shooting studio shots until I found out that it will easily bounce off the back wall.

Right, wrong connector type. Rebels just have a "standard" 2.5mm headphone jack connector.
