Im looking for some P2P software that i can use to LEGALLY download files, i dont mind paying a yearly membership, im just looking for the best option. Im looking to download games and music.

As the software companies have constantly tried to point out, it's not the P2P software used which makes the download legal or illegal, it is the copyright status of the downloaded work.

For music, try cNet.com's music download site (the successor to MP3.com) -- some 75,000 free mp3's there ...

Doesn't your local video store rent games?
03/20/2007 12:24:09 AM · #5
ya but dont they have things that prevent you from ripping the games?
03/20/2007 12:25:33 AM · #6
When you sign up for limewire, you have the option to checkmark the box that says you only want to download stuff that is legal... I've never tried checking that box, so I don't know how good it works, but I think they have games on there too.

oh...and if you want to do this legally, why are you concerned about something on a rented game that stops you from ripping it?

I don't know but I thought you wanted the game legally in which case there would be no reason to rip it.

Ya but i dont like renting, and now that i think of it the local store doesn't rent out PC games.

And to the limewire thing, i thought of that, but i dont remember if it is 100% Legal cuz when you try to sign up for limewire pro, it says

Are you going to use limewire pro for copyright infringement, how is it still copyright infringment if your paying limewire money? If so, what is the point of paying them? What are you paying for?

I misread (or rather didn't fully read) the original post as I thought you were interested in downloading PS2 games rather than PC via P2P so you're correct the video store wouldn't help you. As far as Limewire there is no fee for the basic version. The pro version for which there is a fee just allows you access to some other features of the program. The fee doesn't have anything to do with the content you acquire with the program.

You're supposed to check the box there that says you're NOT going to do copyright infringement. Then, when installing it, you have the option to filter the files or not for only signed, legal files.

The software isn't illegal.
03/20/2007 01:46:45 AM · #13
if you're getting games, music or software for free, that normally isn't, even if you're pay a subscription, it's probably illegal, with very few exceptions.

Fileplanet offer some legally downloaded games. Of course you still need to pay for those games. If you're looking for older games a lot of them have become 'abandonware' and by searching google you'll come up with a plethora of sites offering these sorts of games.

torrents and p2p software aren't illegal ... it's the sharing of copyrighted software that's illegal. torrents are just a different downloading method to p2p. the same copyright laws still apply.

if you download photoshop using a torrent, then that's illegal.

Google for Games on Demand. You'll find a number of services which let you download the top games. You still pay for the game, but you don't have to leave your computer.

I think he is looking for a service you can join where you can download games and music and the rights to own them, burn them is included in a small monthly usage fee. I am not aware of such a service. You can although look on www.download.com and play some free demo's and if you like them you have the option to buy the full version.

Not exactly legal, but can be effective. Put this in google search:

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:"index of" "ARTIST GOES HERE" mp3 [or wmv, or whatever you want; even movie files]

//www.allofmp3.com/

is a site that charges just a few cents for their music downloads. Usually less than $2.00 for an entire album.
