myself and tranquil just spent the past hour retouching a random photo. We both went with kinda different approaches. What do you guys think?

Definitely Tranquil. I have to be honest...but the one by I Enjoy Ham looks way too fake. The colour is too dark. It is a good try but look at the differences. tranquil's version is sharp right through to the eyes. The skin is gentle but clear.

I have to agree with Judi. The smoother look can work but here it just doesn't feel right.

I prefer tranquil's skin and your background.

Also, it appears that you closed down her pupils a bit. They look a little more like she is on the "defensive" like that. The originals looked a little more "inviting". I do like what you did to the colored part of her eye, however.

YEAH! I like it! Are you using that "Portrait Professional" software that does the head sculpting?

03/19/2007 12:35:24 AM · #13
yessir I am.... used it to widen her head a bit... I also added virtual makeup in Photoshop CS and random layers to clean her up hehehe :)

Am I the only one who prefers 777's original to all of the retouches? Am I missing the point here? (First to admit that I'm a PS bumbler.)

LOL!! My entire look could have been achieved with makeup and a clever hairdo :) But sometimes, when we can't do the makeup ourselves or just don't think about it when shooting a portrait, it is nice to have smart software to help us out :)

I loved the original BTW, I just wanted some practice ;)

I also like the original most, but TCGurus version is the best of the retouched ones...

I'm just curious since you state this is just a random photo, do you have the original photogs permission or the models permission to do any of these retouches to it? What if the changes you make offend the model by making the changes your showing what you see as imperfections? I dont know just seems to me as much as people on here scream and hollor when someone takes their photo and posts it as their own, or does some editing to it and posts it on the internet that maybe its not best to pull random photos and do what you want to with them without prior permission.

We didn't claim them as our own and if the original owner wishes me to take mine down I certainly will. It is not in my general portfolio here either... it is in my workshop so random browsers can't see it. Just this thread.

I assumed Stan777 knew of the original edits. If not, simple politeness would dictate telling him now. FWIW, feel free to play with any photo of mine - just let me know so I can play along on the thread with the revisions. :)

I, too, prefer the original over all 3. First, I like freckles. Second, I don't like massive amounts of makeup. Third, all three revised mouths look wrong to me, although I have to admit I might not say that without the original in front of me.

TC, I'm curious why did you think it necessary to change her face's shape? I mean, I know our society frowns on freckles and cherishes plasticized makeup, but face shape? Or were you just playing with the tool?

I like the original best too. While I like the work Tranquil did to her eyes and the extra bit of contrast, I don't so much like the deleting of the background. I love the freckles also. :) The others look a little too smooth and overdone for my tastes. But it's fun to play (hopefully not at the original photographers or models expense though). :)

I actually undid a lot of what that tool did... it tried to widen her nose and change her mouth... it was because her eyes were so wide... I just thought it would be nice if her face (forehead really) were a touch wider in the shot so they didn't overpower it... I didn't change the shape of the mouth, just added some lipstick (the colour she was already wearing) and outlined them with a slightly darker colour to give them pop...

:)

Anyway, that's why ;) hehe

Wow. So now there's a filter that decides what face shape is most attractive. I wonder what was the socioeconomic, racial, national, and cultural makeup of the programming team!

Bad choice of wording on my part, just trying to make the point that without permission to do the edits may not be the best way to go about learning things. Its always proper to ask the original photographer before doing this, this is the essentially the same thing that people complain about in threads. Even though you didnt post it as your own(I didnt mean to imply that you did if thats how you read it), I dont think that randomly grabbing shots off other photographers portfolio is a good way to do things, you will eventually end up with someone getting their feelings hurt.

No, it makes the face symmetrical... it doesn't choose what shape is best.... big difference between the two. ;)
