I just wanted to share pics of my Key West vacation. I made a simple Flash page with somewhere around 196 photos ... thanks to the advice of members regarding the Keys also!

vaca-pics

PS: the underwater shots are from Dry Tortugas National Park (Fort Jefferson), the pano shot is of the Casa Marina hotel (not necessarilly recommended), the blah blah blah ... questions or comments welcome! thanks.

PSs: if one of these shows up in a challenge don't slam me!

Can I slam you for the loud, obnoxious music, that I can't seem to turn off... or the fact that once the page loads I can't scroll to navigate through the shots...? :)

I WOULD like to see the shots, especially since we visited the Keys last summer, but I'm finding it awfully hard to navigate.

let me know when you take music off and I may actually look at the shots...

At the bottom right you can hit slide show or skip through manually. I realize the hokey quality of the site - I usually just turn down the volume to get rid of the Gorillaz (music) !

tough crowd ... music is gone now ... navigation issues?
Do you guys not have a volume on your computers ;P ?

I had the same problem with navigation - if you open an image that's larger than your screen, you lose all control, thumbnails etc.

I was interested to see them too having recently been to Key West, but couldn't get beyond the third image due to the navigation (or it not working my browser)

Sound is off on the machine so couldn't hear the music (I like the Gorillaz though!)

Give this a try.

Looks like this, and is a whole lot faster too.

Nice first pic by the way.

Should I make the images smaller?
03/15/2007 03:42:08 PM · #9
PS: this page was made in Photoshop CS2 (not the best web page program I realize).

I can't see the bottom of the pics on the screen here at work. Was really interested in seeing those first few 'abstracts' at least. Not sure I like the way the site is set up but the pics I got a chance to see were great. :)

Believe it or not I used to use that to create pages ;] !!! Thanks for the reminder - it looks like the airplane logo has been replaced by a frog .... that's gotta be better ;P

I'm downloading it now - I'll let you guys know when i have something decent.

GIve me a little whie and I'll fixy
03/15/2007 03:45:31 PM · #13
The problem is that any of the images that are tall enough to cause the screen to scroll end up taking away the bottom navigation. There are no scroll bars to get down there, and then you're screwed as far as viewing anything else.

Why not do it in something other than Flash?

silly me -- I made mostly 16 bit TIFs on all this and jalbum only likes ... well NOT TIFs ... JPGS! ...
I'll be back . ..

OK -- slight improvement to the page:

Updated Key West image page …

THere's a few whings I'll change - like adding an area for comments and changing the title to something other than "JPGs"

Much better! :)

Thanks for taking the time to repost them... I enjoyed looking through them. The underwater ones are pretty slick!

Did you see the Cat Man at Mallory Square?

No but I saw some guy dressed as a clown and he had two pastel-colored poodles.

Great photos Metatate! I will be going to the Keys in April. (My first time) Any suggestions? Thanks!

Great photo's, what did you do for the underwater? Did you break the bank and get an underwater housing? Or did you go with the ziplock bag thingy or a P&S underwater digital?

When I went to Maui, I ended up getting the Olympus 720sw and the housing that was made for it with an external strobe.

I went through the updated photos. Very nice series. WHat did you use to take the underwater shots with? Do you have an underwater housing for the D70?

Very nice images there. This one, for how simple it is, just thoroughly amazes me. I love how it looks like a painting.

Oh - the underwater stuff was with a friend's camera (Olympus 5050 this - it shoots in RAW ... until you replace the batteries and it goes back to JPG and you don't notice) ... He has a nice underwater housing for that ... those were taken at Fort Jefferson (Dry Tortugas island). I was reminded how slow point and shoots cameras react.

Let me say this - the Keys are LONG ... to get from Key Largo / Marathon etc. to Key West is longer than one would want to drive to go to dinner or something (Mapquest says 2 hours but traffic could make it longer I think) .... so it depends on where you're staying. If you do go to Key West, the Almond Tree Inn is a nice hotel at a decent price - they have a fun little happy hour thing they include free as well as a continental breakfast). We also stayed at the Casa Marina which is pricey and we were disappointed due to loud partiers and construction (they did refund some money as a result) - oh and they don't give anything for free - they even try to nickle and dime you with a daily resort fee of 18$.

The following are suggestions for the lower Keys and Key West ...

Most people say go to Dry Tortugas ... I agree. I took the this Yankee Freedom - they give you a map o fthe area and a tour ... as well as meals and drinks on the way home ;)
If you snorkle (hopefully you will - they provide the stuff) go around the coal docks (a series of pillars that used to hold a dock - now it's just old metal covered in coral and such) - This is slightly more rewarding than making your way out to the coral beds IMO.

You might also take a day trip to Bahia Honda State Park on Big Pine Key - if you want a relaxing day at the beach. I think it took about an hour to get there by car (we rented a car 1 day and walked arounnd Key West the other days). We actually went here several years ago when I asked my wife to marry me - it wasn't popular back then so we had most of the beach to ourselves - unfortunatly, the secret is out so its more crouded.

As for partying, I really enjoyed the Hog's Breath - great talented live bands nightly - try to find a seat! Also the popular green parrot was fun too (crouded though). These are the obvious places - there are other great places - none disappoint - walk along the boardwak and around the Mallory Square area - RAW bars and the like - everyone is friendly and casual (well mostly everyone!) - it's a party!

I love to talk about this stuff so feel free to ask for more info.

P.S. did you see the "green flash"?
