Dumb questions but do canon mount lenses only work on canon cameras? Or could you get them to mount on a pentax or sigma or olympus somehow?

Thanks

the short answer is yes they only work with canon cameras, however I think you may be able to get converters to other makes but most likely lose some functions .

While everything's possible, my simple answer is 'njet'.

Ok, then what mount or type lens does...

Pentax use?

Olympus use?

Simga use?

Minolta use?

Sony use?

Do each of them use their own brand of lens? Manufactured by themselves? Or does say Sony use, Milolta lenses or Olympus use pentax lenses? Never quite understood this.

pentax is pentax... olympus is olympus... sigma is sigma... and sony im not sure about, however all of these companies for the most part have thier own lense systems. It starts getting a little confusing when a company liek Sigma or Tamron has a lens which they make for multiple cameras for instance sigmas 8mm lens is being manufactired with both a nikon mount and a canon mount.

They all have different mounts and aren't compatible. There aren't many cross-brand adapters either.

There are a few adapters that convert older lenses o newer equipment. And very few cross-platform adapters.

And FWIW, Sony uses Minolta mounts... because Sony is Minolta :-)

Pentax use? Pentax KAF

Olympus use? 4/3rds

Simga use? Sigma

Minolta use? Minolta/Sony (same thing)

Sony use? Minolta/Sony (same thing)

Nikon?: F mount

Canon?: EF or EF-S (currently)

Panasonic?: 4/3rds

etc...

Edit to add: There are some lenses that can be made to work on another mount, but not many. And those that do generally lose AF ability if not more. Any kind of lens based image stabilization will not work for sure.

Zeiss is making Nikon F-mount lenses that will be only MF. Leica makes 4/3rds mount lenses currently and is expanding that line.

Canon has "shallow" mounts on their lenses. For this reason, few other cameras can adapt to Canon. On the other hand, many other mounts can be used on Canon with adaptors. Adaptors are like spacers between the lens and the camera, with a native mount on the inside and a foreign mount on the outside. For a fact, both Nikon and Pentax adaptors are available to fit Canon bodies.

Whether all the electronic/automated functions will cross over is another issue altogether, but you CAN mount them and use them manually.

Carl Zeiss (optics) is owned by the Carl Zeiss Group, HQs in Oberkochem, Germany. The Carl Zeiss Group has numerous holdings, one of which is Contax.
