if you're going to be original
plan on being copied ;0)

I'd say the worst thing about this type of stuff is when people lavish gobs of credit and praise onto people that are most likely doing things that have been done a thousand times before. At the end of the day when you've traveled around a bit, it's much less impressive.

That lightbulb/painting thing has been done before...
Cat's staring into Goldfish bowls?...C'mon!
Grunge has been around for 20 years (probably longer)...

Perspective. I think people are having trouble digesting the fact that they pumped a guy up to Superhero status and he's just another dude doing what so many people do on a daily basis.

...Waterglass shots!!!

I blame Society....well, The System...Big Business?

;P

I think we all are inspired by each other's work, but its true, usually when we emulate them, we put our own touches on them, and if it's too close to the one we copied, we give credit where it's due.

I think Rikki just has some wires crossed or some very missing clues about what's right and wrong.

Hey, waitaminute, you can't talk about ladybugs without talking to me first. I OWN ladybugs! Especially ladybugs on Gerberas. That's a class action lawsuit if you go there!

Didn't read the whole thread. It did look like Rikki had credited a number of the originals, but not in Deapees. He told me he forgot who had done it originally. It's tough to credit someone if you can't remember where it came from. Still, crediting is good when inspiration has a source. But honestly, how many of the shots here are inspired by someone else and how few give credit?

Turns out this week two of my entries are inspired by other DPC photos. (very ironically, one is Rikki's) I did mention them, but c'mon. I think there's a bit of "setting the bar just below our feet" going on in this thread.

as far as i'm concerned - regarding the betta fish in a glass photo. no i was probably not the first to shoot something similar, i did come up with the idea with out finding similar shots online, and it has been re-done, so to speak a half dozen times here at DPC in a range of colors and compositions - with some of the photogs pointing to my image as the inspiration. in my mind it's an honor that folks would like to try to mimic, one-up, or learn from a photo i took.

on the other hand it's a different story if someone were to download my version, and post it as their own. Rikki got in some serious heat here at DPC for something that was truly wrong to do, and i feel - to some degree - he's taking some heat now for which he cannot defend himself. he didn't steal anyones work - merely tried to recreate it in a similar fashion. if you want your IDEAS to be protected you'll have to jump through some serious hoops, and likely spend a fair amount of money.

i think the title of the thread sums it up. be flattered that others are awe struck or inpsired enough to try to emulate your work.

i'm not trying to stand up for anyone - merely pointing out that sometimes things need to be taken at face value.

I don't see a way you could protect them really. Copyright wouldn't apply. Patents wouldn't apply. Ideas aren't protectable in any meaningful way when it comes to photographs. There was an interesting Slate article on plagiarism (which is really what this is - visual plagiarism) recently.

Immature artists imitate. Mature artists steal.

that's why i said - in other words - spend ALOT of money. there is a way to do anything if you have the funds i would imagine.

i wouldn't - personally - consider this plagerism. at least until - as you mention - there is a reasonably affordable and controllable way to register an idea- therefore 'protecting' it in some documentable manner. although MS windows does spring to mind. but even so, the patent system is full of holes as it is... so it'll likely never happen.

Urm, no. I was disagreeing with you. Ideas in this form don't make any sense whatsoever as patents. The image itself is copyrighted. Ideas specifically can't be copyrighted. Perhaps a clever way to achieve it could be marginally be patentable, but the idea itself isn't patentable at all.

Lots of money wouldn't help you.

Also, in every case in this thread, the ideas aren't exactly original anyway.

actually - once you 'take' the photograph - it's not really an IDEA any more.

Of course it is. There's the idea and there is a photograph of it. The idea still exists.

i understand you were disagreeing - but money CAN buy pretty much anything. my point was that it would be nice to be able to protect an idea.

no - you 'had' an idea to take a photo of a turd on a fork. once you took the photo the idea part is past tense, and your photo - if presented - might give other people fresh ideas.

Wow, I've been trying to start a cult for over a decade now and I still don't have followers as unconditionally devoted as Rikki's. How does he do it??

After he ascended from DPC on his cloud, nobody heard anything from him. Until his disciples started talking about him again.
