There is a possibility that he did forget where he saw it. I know many people copy shots and may not know exactly where they got the idea from. some stuff has been done alot of times before. I have seen a shot like this one 4 or 5 times. I don't know whose was first. MY wife took a shot for a challenge and someone commented that my wife had copied her shot (not in a mean way at all BTW) but my wife actually got the idea from a shot on deviant art. so while Rikki was on DPC he may have gotten the idea from another shot that was like this. Nobody sees every photo here.

I will say however that is kinda lame to do pretty much the exact same shot and use the same title.

But it doesn't matter.....everyone will still welcome him back with open arms right? Sheesh!

Yanko, c'mon dude. Was your water splash shot on top of a Budweiser with a smiley face and named "King of Beers"? If not then you just took a splash shot that most, if not all, people have seen at some point. Painting a swirl with a flashlight over top of a lightbulb is hardly a cliche shot.

You think this image is anywhere near being similar to this one even though they share the same title? Illuminate may very well be a common word to use for a lightbulb shot but for Rikki to do this particular shot, in this color, with this title, along with his description - not making it known that he saw it somewhere else (like he did with the Hershey's Kiss shot) is a bit over the top.

I forgot it's a new week so there must be a new Rikki thread. Should he have stated where he got the idea for the shot? Sure. Are there many people here guilty of the same? Most definitely myself included. I've done a water splash shot and *gulp* didn't give anybody else credit!

I'll get the rope...

Ha. Actually I did give credit to IreneM for the inspiration of that shot so that's a bad example. However, I did notice on one of my recent uploads that I used the same title as deapee's photo and it too is of a light bulb. While the shots are different I better not take any chances and send him some royalties especially since he has guns.

Just looked at his photo and wow your's is 1000 times better!

You guys kill me. You tell everyone the exact steps to make the photo then get mad when they do it. Then justify getting mad with "well he didn't give credit".

At least the guy who took it didn't get to upset.

I'm not upset...I'm flattered. I wasn't certain that it was the same Rikki. If you look at my photo again, you'll see Rikki even commented on it...twice lol...so I just wanted to make sure it was the same guy.

this is dumb. who cares if he replicated the shot. everyone copies everyone. Who has done a water drop before? Besides that, Im sure the original isn't the first person to A. use the tilte "painting w/ light" and B. use this technique.

Its good training to replicate shots you like, especially when its something new and interesting to the photog.

Besides that, we have an entire section of "howd they do that" and "tutorials". THere is step by step instructions so of course it will be repeated.

Does anyone actually read a thread anymore or do most just read the first post and respond from there?
03/14/2007 11:42:02 AM · #36
It's the same Rikki
03/14/2007 11:57:58 AM · #37
Your's is MUCH better. You should be really flatered that he copied your idea and still couldn't do it as well.

I have no problem trying to recreate a shot you have seen, but when you recreate something so unique and do it so exact (even the title!!!), and then take credit for the idea... Sorry, but that's pretty low.

That shot sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't remember where I saw it. :-)

I think David has the right idea; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Regardless of how we all feel about Rikki he's out there trying to get things done. Do I think he should have given deapee credit? Maybe... well, sure I guess. But that's really up to him. He did attempt to duplicate David's original shot but (playing the devil's advocate here) it is a slightly higher perspective.

We're all inspired by someone or some form of art as it applies to our photography. I'd hope that I could show the same character if one of my shots were imitated.

Hint...hint....

;)

Edit to add: and yes I think that David's is a much better shot in many ways. JM2C.

i think he wouldn't dare link anything about himself back to DPC for what he has allegedly done. he's got a reputation to uphold at eyefetch - oh he's the KING!

ok, if it happens once,... ok.

but 3 times? and 3 times (once almost) the same title, and totally no creativity from the photographer self?

That's bad!!

Oh my gosh that is so pathetic! Same title and everything, again. I wonder how many more there are.

Way to go Brad!!! I'm glad you called him on it.

Boy. . Rikki. . .he just keeps chalking up respect from this dpc crowd, doesn't he! What could he be thinking, not even using his own titles for his copycat photos! He has to know there are lots of dpc members on Eyefetch!

Yeah. ..I'd say he has crossed the line into the pathetic! Ick!

My thoughts exactly....I just don't understand or will ever. Photography is art and expression and should come from within, not without. Inspiration is one thing and this is another.

How completely disappointing. :( I think this unfortunately enters the realm of cheap knock-off. It seems to be getting a little more difficult to argue that this is imitation, flattery, or homage.
03/14/2007 01:03:46 PM · #49
let's be fair...his bad jewelry photo had to be inspired by something equally as bad...

maybe we should have a "contrition" challenge :\

i find a ton of inspiration at this site, and have a ton of shots in my faves as images to emulate. however, some shots are just too much to be able to replicate without REALLY, REALLY studying the original...
03/14/2007 01:04:01 PM · #50
I was thinking..

if this thread was posted before the "what would happen when Rikki came back"-thread, there wouldn't be much people left who said they'd welcome him back with open arms...

I definately changed my mind.
