Only just enetered my first contest so not sure if I could really call my score an average yet but I completely agree. Hope to get better but will try not to get to depressed about scoring in the meantime. Good luck to us all.

Thank you Muppet! You're a bit too generous with my English, but anyway thank you for the compliment! Some day or another I will become a member and will upload that picture to my portfolio... actually I didn't take it with the intention to arise any emotion to the viewers, I took it because I had to stop that moment in time, as it was so magic!
It was during the summer time and at the end of the vacation my friends and me exchanged the pictures from our holidays and later I found that that picture was used as a desktop image on someone's cell phones and computers! It's been so flattering...

at gattamarta: i know the feeling all to well of wanting to become a member. it's in my goal list to get that coveted blue shirt by the summer (it's mid-spring over here). you'll have to let us know when you get some pictures in your portfolio :)

at canary: good luck on your challenge, and welcome to DPC. which challenge did you enter?

at Delta_6: what are the Perth Royal and Wanneroo Shows? are they big and fancy events with lots of recognition?

also at canary: wow! you've been here 6 months and are just entering your first challenge? sorry about the welcome to DPC part earlier ^_^' you probably know by now that voters tend to be harsh, but i'm still rooting for you all the way :)

So, Delta_6is Garth Tander your man in V8 Supercars? I watch every race, we get them a week or later in UK. I used to support Marcus Ambrose, 'til he upped and went to Nascar.

1) What do you want to achieve in your photography?
Hmmm, lets see... I really enjoy photographing old buildings (or pretty much anything old) & nature. I look at it as a way of preserving & also bringing attention to needed issues. Whether it be the beauty of an old home that is on the verge of ruins, or the beauty of nature which is always threatened by pollution & encroaching developement. I had always wanted to be an archeaologist (but became a mom instead), so I guess this is my way of satisfying that preservation urge. I really would love to sell my photographs to help raise money for historical sites, nature reserves, & our veterans.

2) What reactions do you hope for in your viewers?
I would hope that my photography would instill a more delicate outlook on the various things around us, that would ordinarily be overlooked.

3) What challenges do you face in photography, and how do you overcome them?
This is a hard one. I currently only have p&s cameras. I think this may restrict me from getting that complete quality that I want, but I'm determined that I will do it with what means I have available. I also am still learning alot about different digital processing techniques. I really like to have a more natural look anyway, but I would still say this is a challenge for me.....I am my worst critic! I'm sure I am going to think of something later that would better fit this question!

Yes he is, I have followed him ever since he had his 1st V8 drive and have known him longer. I met him the year he won the Australian Formula Ford Championship and was very surprised when he remembered me the next year. Don't know him really well but we converse by email from time to time. The cleansweep the burning rivalry shots in my portfolio I have got 8x12 prints of and am sending them to him to sign and send back.

The Royal Show is the big show in the state, run by the Royal Agrigultural Society. Very big and fancy and lots of recognition. The Wanneroo show is similar but not so big or fancy and less recognition but it is my local event.

at Drummie: nice. old looking subjects always tend to be photogenic. :)

at Delta_6: oh, ok. maybe i should look around for photography events here. i doubt i'll find a fancy shindig like the Royal Show, probably more like your Wanneroo Show (which sounds VERY Australian)

at klstover: i'm glad that at least somebody noticed the candle and outlet together :) i still haven't looked at the full results of my entry, but i'm doing that right now. (this was my night shot entry)

1) Professionalism, the elimination of mistakes, the evoking of emotion in the viewer, capturing the beauty that I see in a scene and being able to convey it to the viewer.

2) As above, I want the viewer to see what I see in the photo.

3) Stripping away my pre-conceived perceptions of things and evaluating a scene in and of itself. For example, if I see a picture of Western Australian Wheatbelt country I immediately think of my Uncle's farm and the fun I have there. Therefore the picture means one hell of a lot more to me than to someone else who has not had my experiences. I don't really know how to overcome that.

I know what you mean. I am gradually losing ground in my scores, and it should only be a few more challenges before I am under 5 again. Anyway, even if it is not something you remember as a child, I do take shots that mean something to me. Obviously I am a bit twisted and ready for a a padded cell, because they have no meaning to anybody else. That is why I keep getting poor scores, indicating I am a poor photographer at best, and totally unable to see as the world sees. I will always march to my own drummer, continue to take photos that hold meaning to me, and that is that. I won't change, so I am not even going to try.

Thanks Muppet. Just been working like a dog for too long so took my time to enter a challenge and then hurried. Good luck with future challenges yourself.
04/19/2007 12:35:23 PM · #213
well, honestly. that's a good score for a first submission. it's the next one you have to look out for :) you've lost your first challenge mentallity, so you might be like me in that i was somewhat careless about my second entry. take care of the basics with your next entry, and it can go a long way. as for this picture, i kinda like it. nice colours, in focus, and you don't find many signs like that around here :) can't wait to see your next entry.

ps, luck! i don't need luck! ...okay, so i do need luck...please send the good luck back this way!!! oh, and uh, good luck to you too :D

Add me! Add me! I'm struggling to hit 5!
04/19/2007 05:52:22 PM · #215
you'll have to wait for our leader, but consider it done!
04/25/2007 07:23:43 AM · #216
I am still struggling to get back down to below 5. So far, I have reduced my score from 5.19 to 5.16. Still trying to keep my photos to below 5 for scores. Not doing badly. Unfortunately my insects photo scored higher than I expected, which offset the prior sub 5 scores I got. But my hair challenge pretty much wiped that out. Lets see if I can continue the trend with my rule of thirds and triptych entry.

PROUD SUPPORTER OF THE AVERAGE UNDER FIVE CREW.

Everyone should be added now.
If I missed anyone, let me know! I'll die of mortification and then add you. :-)

I am so sorry for the belatedness of everything.

I'm so very behind...I need to pay more attention....

1) What do you want to achieve in your photography?
I would love to be able to see my picture in my head (I can do that already)...and then go take that picture. It's alot harder than it sounds. I'd eventually like to be able to sell them locally, at the art festivals in my town.
2) What reactions do you hope for in your viewers?
I want to capture moments...not just a pretty picture (sometimes, sure) but I want my pictures to carry all sorts of emotions
3) What challenges do you face in photography, and how do you overcome them?
My camera isn't the greatest, but its better than no camera. And I don't have a full post processing suite to edit my pics on, but I am making do (due?).

Many thanks Jackal, things in photography are looking up for me at the moment, there is a possibility that I am going to become a trainee for a photography company that specialises in action shots at sporting events.

And your signature looks so cool I decided to copy it :-P
