Calling all UK members/users.

I'm looking for cheap, reliable airlines which fly between London and Glasgow (preferably from Heathrow). I know of British Midlands but I'm sure there are others. I'm checking to see if booking this leg separate from my Canada/London leg would produce an overall fare or not.

Thanks for any help that can be given

Hi Colette, here Álex from Spain: if you don't find anything interesting, you can always come to Alicante and fly then to Glasgow at a very good price. And you can even see the sun, LOL.
Good luck on your search...

Álex.

For cheap UK flight calculations, I recommend //www.skyscanner.net

Other than BMI, the cheap airlines fly from t=other airports. Heathrow is generally the easiest to get to, but Gatwick is good, and Stanstead and Luton are often manageable.

If you book in advance, you can get British Airways flights ( //www.ba.com ) at similar prices.

Personally, I regard the cheap airlines as awful - stressful to use and disastrous in the event of a cancellation. But as long as nothing goes wrong, they can be cheap. Again personally, I would go BA if I could (or extend your longhaul flight - if you can class it as a stopover, it may be free).

Generally speaking the low cost airlines do not fly from Heathrow, they utilise the smaller London area airports like Stansted/Luton airports (not at all convenient if you arrive in Heathrow). eg. Ryanair flies from Stansted to Prestwick (close to Glasgow), 4 flights a day and the cost is pretty low. However, it could take you 2 hrs to get from Heathrow to Stansted, and I don't think the cost difference is really worth it!

Your best options are BMI (British Midland) and British Airways if you want to fly from LHR. Both have fares around US $150 - as always, if you take a flight in peak time the fares increase significantly.

Hope this helps a bit

I agree - if you are not planning to stop in London first, then definitely stick to Heathrow and BA or BMI. The cost of the transfer to another airport alone will wipe out any savings in flight costs. I saw BA flights advertised as "from £41" (under $90) on their website when I looked for you.

If you are planning a short break from London during your stay, then the other airports could be convenient (depending on your other plans).

Where are you planning to visit?

I'm doing two photography workshops with a local photographer in Scotland. One based in Ullapool and one on Skye. They offer pickup/dropoff for the airport in Glasgow which is why I'm looking for a connection. I have lots of time. The workshops are at the beginning of October.

edit: Thanks everyone for all the input. Any searches I do from here seem to have connections through LHR on BMI (using Air Canada as the longhaul).

Can't you fly Air Canada straight into Glasgow ? or is it just more expensive/ bad times ?

Nothing direct from Edmonton and I try to avoid Toronto. It's worse than connecting through LHR. Maybe I can find something through Montreal.

edit: Another idea is to try something through Amsterdam.

And to follow up on the ryanair/prestwick reference, prestwick is 45 minutes on the train from glasgow, and the ticket costs £5.00 single, I believe.
