In my slavish tradition of trying to turn myself into Tony Ray-Jones, I managed a day in Scarborough.

There is something only partially sane about English seaside towns in the winter: hope I've caught some of it here.

I think you did a good job. Perhaps a little more of the stiff upper lip in the face of a biting wind along the beach type of shot. I've never been to Scarborough though I have spent many a day walking Britain's beaches in all seasons and weather, including several years of surfing in Cornwall come sun, rain, frost, or even snow.

Ah, good old Scarborough. I am going to be staying in Robin Hood's Bay for a few days the week after next, so shall probably pop down for some fish and ships. The two that connect with me most are the one of the flat-capped, rain-coated, laced-up leather shoe wearing man eating his sandwiches on the slipway, and the one taken in the ice-cream parlour. Did you try a Sundae? I have heard that this place makes the Best, but have never tried one.

Never been there Ed, a good job, choice of B/W always seems to produce a better impact with these type of shots.

Brilliantly observed, Ed. Being from "down South" these resonate with similar sights on the South East and South coasts but they all feel so timeless and placeless that I would have been hard pushed to say where the pictures were taken, other than an English seaside town during the off season. And they do so capture that off season "vibe" so well.

British seaside towns give me a feeling of melancholy. They have this 60s-70s look, the look that their heyday is gone, almost like ghost towns. Beingh from abroad, I only experienced them recently. Anyone else feels this?

I wouldn't quite say melancholy, nostalgic for me,a chilly early morning walk down the prom out of season is wonderful, brings back my chilhood memories, perfectly caught by Eds pics I think, no hustle or rush, great air and very relaxing, and of course the chance for some great pictures.

Ed,

I think these are great images. I went to Blackpool earlier this year - I hope you don't mind me sharing some photos with a similar theme (though I took a different approach):
