Anyone else have Netflix and a constant problem with being sent scratched, even cracked basically unplayable DVDs? It seems all to frequent for me. If I wasn't so addicted to The Sopranos and The Wire I'd probably cancel.

Nope, not once. But I don't receive a high volume and often am not requesting stuff that's too common, so it probably hasn't passed through as many hands.

Just a few had problems. Then I had a few that they said I never returned. Other than that, I am happy with Netflix. Much better than those damn late fees I paid to BB.

I haven't had any problems but I rent mostly documentaries that probably don't get the circulation as the popular movies do.

It does seem that the ones you really want the most are broken or scratched.

Still I think NF is one smartest entertainment decisions I've made in years. I spreadsheet everything, and last year I started NF at the end of Feb and got 131 movies. That's $1.51 a movie, not counting the few times I ran to my local video store to replace a scratched movies. I checked and 8 were damaged. Out of 131 that's pretty good odds.

Of course I might be a unique case in that TV is not watched in my household, so I tend to watch a movie almost every night.

Been with Netflix for about six months now. Really enjoying it. Have only received 2-3 DVDs that were cracked and they sent a quick replacement.

My big issue is how long it takes for them to "receive" my returns, and how long to get the next one. Sometimes it takes only a day, other times a week. Right now I'm waiting for one that was "supposed" to be here last Friday!

I can't help but think that sometimes the post office is "borrowing" them too. MOre than once I've received the packet and it's been taped shut and it's 2 days late. Of course I have no proof.

These things should turn around in a day.... the closest Netflix warehouse is about 90 miles down the road.

But still, I'm happy with the overall service, and they sure have a bigger selection than our local rental store, and about 1/3 the cost.

I've had a couple of DVDs arrived snapped in half, but only 2 in several years.

Service used to be much faster until I moved across town to a different postal office. I also suspect that shipping delays increase with the number of movies you go through each month.

They do have certain options for the returns to be scanned in transit, so you get the next one sent out before the old one gets back, but that again depends on your post office being up to date enough to be part of that system.

Don't have Netflix now. But, back when I did, no problems. I'd imagine the breaking DVD's is due to the fancy packaging they come in. But, that's just a guess.

We've had some scratched ones, but almost all improved with a quick cleaning. The one or two that weren't fixed completely had just the smallest of skips.

I work at the Post Office and I see the enormous amount of Netflix DVD's go thru our office. They are sorted on automated machines at a very high speed, about 10 per second. They sort fine going to the customer as the DVD is on the front side of the package. Problem is the design is real bad for the postage paid return, the DVD will be on the back/side, leaving this floppy flap to go thru the machines first. We try an pick most of them out before they go thru, but some get quite mangled. After seeing how they are processed, I would never join Netflix.
Blockbuster has a much better design package going both ways, they seem to make it thru the machines a lot better. I always tell my friends to join blockbuster rather than netflix.

Ha, that's amazing. Yeah I guess I go through em really fast too, so the odds are better that some will be scratched. Also I rent highly popular ones that often have "short wait" instead of "available now" on them.

I've also been able to fix quite a few with toothpaste and lemon pledge furniture polish...incredible that it works.

I did see somewhere once that the more you got from them the lower you got on the list for getting a movie. something to do with making lesser users happier to spread word of mouth since high end users were saving so much they had less to complain about.

I've been using NF for a couple years now, and I've never received anything cracked or unplayable. Scratched, sure, but always properly buffed and they never skip.

There was a class action suit against them for this, and they lost it.

I've never heard of this fix. I suppose the toothpaste works as an abrasive, and the polish cleans any residue.

So how do you do it? Rub the toothpaste on first, and then the polish to clean it off?

I read about it online...

It only works with the actual paste toothpaste, not gel. I rub it on in small circles with a microfiber cloth, allow to dry and then rub off with some force from center of cd to outer edges in straight lines. That part is important. Then I run it quickly under hot water to get any leftover off and dry. Finally to really shine it a little pledge, and then wipe that off and the finish looks brand new. I haven't done it to one of my own DVDs but I care less about the Netflix ones and it has always worked.

Looking at my account info, I've been going through an average of 5.1 movies per month, for 3 years. Had one broken disk (a Richard Avedon documentary)

03/02/2007 12:39:57 PM · #21
join in '01 and have 671

we've only had a few problem disks - only 5 that were not playable. A few scratches on some, but we just buffed them out.

We've been a member since '02 never had too many scratched, but have had a couple broken. Our problem is when we order a Japanese anime in english they tend to send the japanese one.

However gamefly I joined and never once recieved a good disk. All the ones we've gotten were either broken or scratched. We tried it for a month and that was enough.
