I'd love to discuss it, but don't have much to offer, I'm still splashing around learning.

I used to subscribe to a sensational mag called "Black & White", which I assume is an international publication. No tip in there directly, just great photography, which in itself is a great learning aid.

Problem is the mag went downhill and I stopped my subscription about a year ago. It was renames to "Not only black & white" (or similar) and last time I looked it was more flashy adverts than anything else. Shame, as it really was a top class production originally.

I think the key to good b&w is the lighting, as with most photos. My feeling, and that is all it is, is that good lighting is even more important than in colour photography.

Great shots there TerryGee. I particularly like the waterfall and the woods. Nice to see a butterfly shot in b&w, they are usually colour. I can't get to see the full sized butterfly one though, for some reason it is linking to the full sized woodland shot.

I belive what makes a good b/w photo has a lot less to do with composition than it does with lighting and the crispness and sharpness of the image and lines. Don't get me wrong....the composition is important but I think these things along with shadows compliment the photo moreso

Personally, I like to shoot animals in black and white. It seems to bring out more emotion in them.

I know what I like in other's shots (enhanced texture, mood and depth, a focus on the subject that colour sometimes dilutes) but I feel less able to judge my own work.

I'd be interested on some further comments on these two as standalone images (which didn't fare too well in challenges). I liked them but I began to question why.

Want some nice cold water?
Handcuffed

I don't really have many, but the first one is my favorite by far.

In addition to what Gordon said, I believe I've read that a good white needs to be present, a good black present, and then some of the grays in between. Personally, I don't like it as much if the sky is the white, as it's too easy to overexpose the sky.

some very nice shots here - good work all !!

BW is a good way to capture texture, depth, emotion...

in some circumstances it works to bring focus to the subject - when color will be distracting.

more on what makes a BW shot - more thoughts on that. post away.

Okay, stupid question...I am fairly new to dpc and haven't figured out how to post my pictures to these threads like you all have..Help!

Easiest way Shelley, which also means putting the clickable thumbnail rather than the whole pic, is as follows:

1) Upload your photo to your portfolio.

2) Open the photo in your portfolio. The photo will have a unique number, look at the address in the Internet Explorer is probably easiest, look for a 5 figure (I think) number towards the end of the address.

3) In the thread you want to put it in, start a message and click on the little button just above where you type, the right hand one. Then simply enter the number in point 2.

Alternately, if the photo is on another site use the "insert image" (middle button just above where you type, right of the i button) and paste in the full web address of the link (not the page, but the actual photo).

Hope that helps.

*laugh* And there should be no stopping you, those are great shots. Kid is cute, but I particularly like the one of the column.

Out of interest (Q to people in general, not just SHelley).....

With most of these shots are people deliberately heading out to get a good b&w shot, or are they taking a pic and then going "Hey, that might look better in b&W"?????
