Many of the comments about my photos were that they were out of focus.

I too have not been pleased with the autofocus on my Nikon D50, and have assumed it was due to camera movement or the camera not focused on the subject. I recently purchased a tripod and took the following shots using the tripod. I was using the 18-200 mm lens.

The photos were shot in RAW and the only processing I did was to convert the photos to jpg.

Is this softness normal?

I have also placed them in my DP Challenge portfolio under Tripod Test folder

I would have to see the image full-sized, but it really doesn't look OOF to me. What I do see is a lack of sharpening. All digital files need SOME sharpening in processing because it isn't being done in camera. Are you using processing software to sharpen your challenge entries and if so how are you sharpening?

I can see a lot of sharp detail but the image appears to be haevily lighted. Im not so sure that this particular image is soft its just so bright. Id run highlights and shadows on it or tone down the exposure on it a bit.

If u used a flash id run a softbox on it.

Focus is fine.

Another note. The extreme ends of your lens will be softer than the center, both in length and aperature. Shoot at the 200 mm end, it will be softer than in the 100mm range. Shoot at f3.5 and it will be softer than f8.

If you'd like a sharper jpg, go into your menu and change the processing settings (can't remember the exact name) from Normal to Direct Print for a P&S type look to your shots.

Just looking at the picture you've posted, and my relative limited experience with editing, I would say your picture is more soft. It definitely doesn't look out of focus to me.

Did you switch VR off when you had the camera on the tripod?

I´m not entirily sure about the VR in the 18-200, but the one in the 70-200 has to be switched off.

Thank you for all of the responses. I do turn off the VR when it is on the camera. What I did learn from following up on this thread is while I have the camera setting for "Normal", but the "Optomize Image" setting on the camera only works when you use the jpg setting. If you shoot in raw, you need to adjust the contrast and Sharpening in PP or the photo will look soft.

I appreciate all of the posts and emails to my question.

That is the case whether you shoot RAW or jpg. Digital files need to be enhanced with processing.
