Hi,
I'd like to buy an extender and read today that some folks think the 2.0 focus is softer compared to the 1.4. Anybody out there with experience with either?...thanks, Kim

Whichever you decide, remember the extender will effectively double the lens focal distance and cut your f-stop by the same amount
Example: a 70-200 f/2.8 w/a 2X converter effectively becomes a 140-400 f/5.6 lens. As for softness, with my Sigma EX 2X teleconverter I don't see anything noticeable. But, I really haven't used it much lately.

Also keep in mind that, in general, you lose AF functionality with the 2x extender while it sill works with the 1.4x (Canon TCs with Canon lenses). Although I find usimg MF more accurate when shooting long subjects anyway.

Also, they don't work with lenses where maximum aperature is greater than f/5.6.

I shoot with the 1.4x TC (Canon MkII) and 70-200 f/4 L often and am quite happy with the results. These were both shot handheld with that combo (at 280.0mm, 35mm equiv):

she has 2.8 lenses so the 2x will auto focus

Whew! That had me worried on the auto focus. I shoot racing sports so the autofocus has to work. Guess I'll be going to visit them at the store before I make up my mind...k

To address the performance specifically with the 70-200, you're going to find the 2.0x + 70-200/2.8 combination pretty soft wide open (f/5.6). Stopping down one or two stops improves things markedly. There is still some loss of contrast, but sharpness is pretty close to what you'd achieve with the lens alone. You're shooting at f/11 though, so good light will be a must.
Honestly, I think you'll be much more satisfied with the 1.4x than the 2.0x.

Thanks. I ordered the 1.4 today and have a race to shoot this weekend to try it out on. Can't wait!...Kim
