I have many pics in my DPCPrints Portfolio, and I think some are worthy (have got the STUFF) but other are crap (FLUFF). I have some ideas of what should go, but I'd love to hear from others on the matter.

BTW, thanks to the person or persons that bought some prints in the last few days (2 prints in under 7 hours). Somebody actually liked one of my shots enough to buy a 16x20. WOW! Who'd have thought?

I would feel uncomfortable telling others what they should try to sell. But if you feel that some are crap you can get a second opinion from the buyers. If it has been available for some time (6 months?) and not sold any, maybe it ought to come down.

I am not that familiar with the print selling side. Is their a way you can tell how many times one of your offerings had been viewed?

Although this site encourages random approaches to subject matter, I think that you could produce a more solid body of work by concentrating on fewer subjects. Your photo of the tree in fog by the lake is one of the better ones in your portfolio - maybe you could explore such subjects in more detail. If you look at all great photographers, they generally pick one area and stick to it. I think that would be a much better way to make use of your talents.

I know that I'm a little all over the place when it comes to subject matter. I guess I'm still trying to find myself.

If anybody sees ME out there, ask him to send me an email.

BTW, people, please feel completely free to give me your opinions. If YOU think it's crap, let me know. I can take it! I know it's alot to ask to go through all the pics on my portfolio, but whatever help I get will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all those who commented so far.

there's nothing wrong with varied subject matter...

maybe with you as with me - i shoot when i have a chance, and cant spend lots of time pondering what i should be taking photos of. instead i shoot whatever presents itself, and keep the decent results. sometimes i will go back and retry if i liked the idea but didnt quite capture it right. ( if the subject is stationary of course ;}

broader skills are more usefull most times.

i just started looking into the prints, is there a way to organize them into folders like the profile set up - that's all you really need to do in my mind.

Mario: You have a very nice collection of prints. I don't think there are any that are "fluff" but I'll let you know which are my personal favorites and least favorites, if that helps.

I'll start with the least favorites:
Shaggy Mane II
In Flight
Cows
Beer Garden
Two Boats
Driftwood
Dark Forest
Dark Hallway
Like Soldiers Marching into Battle
Garden Path

Favorites:
Sunburst
Early Morning Storm
Oasis in Snow
All Aboard
Rhythm 'n Blues
Tiles
North Hatley Fog
Watch that First Step
Bicycle Rack
Spirals.

I'm sure that doesn't really help you at all since everyone will have different favorites. I say keep them all up unless you aren't happy with them.

I may be wrong but I believe most photographers after a period of time develop a style that is unique to them and usually find a niche and that is the kind of pictures one takes. Not to say that they don't take others, but I think everyone finds their style.

however you need to take photos of lots of different things to weed out what exactly that niche is.

and you always need to keep your eyes open for that perfect shot, no matter what the subject is...

Hey Mario -- I think your portfolio is very good. I went into this excpecting to find several that I wouldn't like, not because they're yours, but because I know there's (in general) a reasonable percentage of "fluff" on the site. That said, the only thing I didn't like in your porfolio were some of your larger borders -- I'm much more fond of your thin border style. "North Hatley Fog", for example, is a great picture, but I think the border detracts from the print. Funny enough, I was looking at JasonPR's list, and some of his least favorites were some of my favorites and vice versa, so don't be too quick to throw those out. Whenever I try to think of what makes a good print, I try to imagine if some type of person would want that print on their walls, and I'd say that the overwhelming majority of your prints satisfy that requirement very well.

In reading this post, I realize I've been pretty vague and probably am not helping, so I'll say that my favorite prints of yours are "Three Views Around the Lake", "Like Soldiers Marching Into Battle", "Dark Hallway", "Heavenly Skies", "Sunburst", "Mother House", and "Dark Forest". If I had to pick three to remove from your portfolio, I'd choose "Beer Garden", "Rose", and "Primula Polyanthus" -- the latter two just because I know we have plenty of flower shots on the site.

Mario - I, too have looked at your portfolio, and I would say that if you want to reduce the number of photos, you are really the only one who can decide. I like your photos, and I would have different favorites than everyone else here.

If you want to sell photos to support your habit, keep the ones that have already sold. Even if you think they're the crappier ones. People don't want pictures to hang just because they're good photos - the ones that have sold already make a connection with the buyers that is a different connection than what you feel. Members of our photo club are often surprised at what sells - tourist shots in particular - and what doesn't.

If this is your gallery and to hell with the profit - trim the crap out, as you define it. Then, when you get a new shot you love just cycle out your least favorite - if you seek DPC popularity, weed out the lowest-scoring pix first.

I'm a relative neophyte here, so maybe this wasn't too helpful, but my main point is that you need to first discern whether profit or aesthetics is your goal at DPC.

Thank you to those who have commented. I know that we all lead very busy lives, and spend much time on this site, as it is very addictive, as is photography as well. I very much appreciate the time people have spent looking and commenting on my portfolio. There have been a great variety of comments, but all have some good points. I will weigh all the different views, and trim according to my thoughts.

Thank you Drew for the comments about my borders. I will definitely look at that carefully from now on.

Never really viewing your gallery I would choose these:
Primavera
Sunburst
North Hatley Fog
Foggy View of the Lake
Three Views Around the Lake
Sunset at six
Up to the Sky

Those are prints I would not only purchase, but hang on my wall.
It's not to say that the rest sucks, but my tastes lean towards that.
