;) I like your dream Ellamay... I want to buy land and let it remain as natural as possible.. I do understand hunting and even have friends who hunt in season, and only for what they will eat. It isnt sport for them its to fill their tummies.

I started a rant about coyotes .. lol had too.

I am ok with hunting when it is for food. I am not a vegetarian yet, tho I want to be. Probably not til my kids are gone tho.

The area in which the event occurred has a very healthy coyote population, despite the (sub-)urban encroachment. The wolf, once native here, has been killed off and pushed further north decades ago, which leaves the coyote without natural predators. Today, it's mostly the scarcity of habitat which keeps the population in check. Coyotes, however, have proven to be more adaptable than any other animal one could think of. To want to see and watch them be, as ellamay did here, is an excellent meditation on what intelligence and sociality is at work and play here. To accept their presence and to live with them, as peacefully and respectfully as we can be as very flawed beings, has become a widely accepted way of life in Southern British Columbia. Our government recognizes this, issues and enforces laws designed to conserve what we have left in these populated fringe areas.

Also, this is Canada. You can't just fire your gun in a populated area and also not within close proximity of a highway or freeway (the No. 1, in this case). It wouldn't matter at all, if the killer was a local farmer or property owner. When I see the rig with the oil drum on the back of it, when I look at the grey woolen shirt the guy is wearing, I think of a logger rather than a farmer.

I think ellamay did what she, sensibly, could by reporting him. And I empathize when I hear how the event made her feel. As for me, I used to talk to killers like this, but always and inevitably found that their light was too dim for reason. But if some sort of ill befell him, I'd pray

it'll happen soon and that no innocent parties have to share it.

And yes, in BC it IS illegal to discharge a firearm from or across a highway.

Kneecaps are a great way to get the point across.

I was pretty much with you until this. Don't let your anger make you as ignorant and insensitive as those you dislike, and don't let your anger turn into abject hate. You're speaking of the torture of a human being, it's not something to be bandied about lightly.

I was joking...hence the smiley. I am opposed to killing humans as well, tho I am inclined to believe we are often the lesser of the animals on this planet.

Other side of story?

Maybe the farmer/rancher was trying to protect his baby. Just another side of this one-sided discussion. Maybe not in this case, but reading the article makes one think about protecting a helpless loved one. Van
