i found the best way to learn the basics was to open multiple copies of the same image and work with different settings of the same effects on each image to see the varying results...

if i come across any good links i'll post them here...

if you google photoshop tutorials i'm sure you'll find lots. adobe's own online tutorials in the adobe studio should be a big help as well.

i did most of my learning in ps through trial and error. its the kind fo program that is fun to play around in even if you don't know how to use it properly yet.

have fun, and good luck.

You may want to look at this thread, and possibly this one
You can also try searching the forums, that's how I came up with the above two (short) threads, but I only looked for a couple minutes.
Thre are good basic tutorials on line, I have used them myself when learning a new tool or technique. I too have learned alot by just playing around, sometimes referring to the help file. I think, though, that you're better off learning about the major features from a well-written book so you're not casting about in the dark to start with. I do wish I'd done so, may still get an advanced book.

Never underestimate the "For Dummies" books great for the basics. As far as using layers and the Blending modes (normal, overlay, etc) they are best learned by playing and experimenting. I'd say layers are the hardest thing to get use to. But when you do they get really fun. I worked for the Pistons Basketball team doing graphic work for print ads and things. We used to cut players out of different action shots and combine them all day long. Getting it to look real, takes a lot of time and experimentation. Have fun with it. You may want to try creativecow.com. I think they have some photoshop tutorials on there. (they deal with video production aspects, but a lot of the photoshop is the same for print or video. It's all just the color base (RGB for video and CMYK for print)
