why is it take we only drive in strict accordance to the law when we see a police patrol car nearby?
01/29/2007 02:49:13 AM · #2
Probably because we don't agree with the laws.

Yet we are the ones that make the laws. We are a funny people. WE yell and scream about freedom and then the first thing we do is make a bunch of rules to limit that freedom.

Funny, I don't recall ever voting on a speed limit.

It's funny that I almost get run over, every day, by people driving at speeds way over the limit, weaving in and out of traffic, running stop signs or red lights and just downright reckless. Yet, there are never any cops around. Except for the one time I'm going 7 over the limit and he decides to pull me over and then gives me a roadside sobriety test. And I was sober. I swear it's a conspiracy against me.

Maybe if you wouldn't stumble and slur... ;-) j/k

I hear ya! I have been picked out of a pack of speeding cars before. It sucks.

Years ago, I was pulled over on the freeway a couple times for speeding when I was moving at the same speed as all the traffic around me. On both occasions I was polite to the CHP officer but pointed out to him that to NOT drive at the prevailing speed (it was about 10 mph over the limit) was a LOT less safe than going with the flow, and I told him I would contest the ticket in court. Both times the officer let me go without a ticket or even a warning.

I have NEVER had a ticket for a moving violation since I had a couple when I was 16. And it's not that I didn't deserve them quite a few times, LOL. In my youth (back in the Jurassic) I used to drive very, very quickly :-) Now, in my old age, I see no point in it.

Do you guys (in the US mainly) have the equivalent as our GATSO cameras? Basically big gray/yellow monoliths that can detect your speed and take a picture which automatically gets sent to you? Those things are great at slowing down the traffic for a 20 meter stretch on a busy mainroad. :-/ People just slow down to pass them then speed up again once out of range. In actual fact, they can be quite dangerous as people can see them at the last second, then slam on their brakes to avoid triggering the camera.

No one really likes them and they are only a revenue generator for the local police/councils.

They tried putting cameras up at a few major intersections where their were high accident rates to catch those who were running the lights. They were ruled unconstitutional and subsequently removed.

Nowadays, it seems that most people regard stop signs as merely a suggestion. One of my personal peeves.

I love this thread, makes me feel so good to live in a country where I can push my Miata to 140mph - legally.

We have them here in DC and I hear they are planning on installing them in PG County (Just outside DC).

Same thing happens. We know where they are and we slam our brakes on just before the cameras and drive the speed limit for the 300 feet or so until we get past them.

One of the worst ideas I've seen. We also have red light cameras, which I do think is a good idea. Especially with the way idiots drive around DC.

Wow, I bet they have some real pretty accidents over there.. :-/

The newest one over here they are stinging us with are the `average speed cameras`, where you have two cameras set a distance apart (a mile, give or take a little bit) and it reads your number (license) plate at the first camera, then reads it at the second, it can then work out your average speed between the two.

Add to that the traffic signal cameras, the bus lane cameras, the congestion charge cameras, the newest `no stopping in the junction box` cameras, we certainly are a well observed bunch of drivers!

Have I missed any?

Remember, Big Brother is watching!

Have you ever noticed.... Anybody going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

One of my favorites:

When the driver asked the policeman why, out of all the speeders, he chose to pull him over, the officer asked,

"You ever go fishing?"

"Yes."

"Ever catch all the fish?"
