Newegg is offering an OEM version of Windows Vista Home Premium edition for $119.99. That's $120 less than CompUSA. And Amazon shows an Upgrade version for $154.99 or the full version for $229.99.

Anyone know if it's okay to upgrade a Windows XP box using the OEM version? Am I missing something?

As long as you buy the qualifying hardware it's legit.

Vista is just a DRM pack disguised into a shiny GUI.

There are papers about Vista and its impact on the world, it's a nice read and it helps understand how big of an impact the film and music industry has on the computer industry.

I wish everyone would read on Vista before running out to buy it. But most ppl probably don't care about getting screwed on their rights and privacy as long as they have prettier icons on their desktop.

For what it's worth, I like to delay upgrading my Windows as long as feasible. Not only is it expensive, but the first few versions tend to be pretty unstable. Not to mention all the Bad Things being said about Vista (not that that's surprising at all).

The release version of vista isnt the first verions is more like Vista 5.0 with about 900 individual builds between it. Remeber its 4 years in the making!

I tested RC1 and Beta 2 RC1 was a huge improvment. Both had all the drivers for my EQ except my video input cardf which was added to RC1's driver database a bit later.

It's not even out yet and SP1 is already planned. I can already hear my customers screaming because their PC is f***ed after upgrading to Vista.

(I work in a PC repair shop)

Just going from Internet Explorer version 6 to version 7 was a nightmare. Hell is coming my way with the release of Vista.

Service Packs are always planned ahead of time. With specific goals in mind also. WIndows XP and Vista are varients of Windows NT and instead of releaseing an update CD like WIn98 did for WIndows 98 SE big chunks of updates are issued as a service pack.

I cant think of a windows version past NT 3.56 that the General goals for a service pack werent thought of before the OS was finally released.

google did make their own distro of Linux but from what I read it is for internal use only and despite the rumors they don't have plans to release it to the general populous.

haha, that Computerworld guy really sounds like an idiot to me... very funny reading what he has to say.

I am using Vista and it is ROCK SOLID

All the security, looks and stability really is an improvement from XP.

I have a pretty good PC with loads of ram and a core duo processor and Vista runs so much faster and sturdier on it.

I recomend Vista to anyone with a good enough computer.

People whine about microsoft

Its their job to whine, but remember, if Microsoft would not come with updates as soon as they can, then people would go crazy becouse they didn't!

Makes sense doesnt it?

I used Vista for just over a month and I liked it. Very solid.

I had to go back to XP because Cisco IP communicator and WiFi support for Cisco EAP-FAST & LEAP isn´t available yet for my laptop :(

That really is a bunch of hogwash. In the vast majority of cases, drivers and software written for XP works fine on Vista. I suspect that companies aren't rushing to write "Vista specific" drivers simply because it's a completely unnecessary exercise. As well, the only issue with software not working that I've had since using Vista Beta 2, RC1, and the final release was shareware written by someone you've never heard of that was available only on Tucows, and that was intended for Win95.

So, should you get Vista? I don't know. If you're a Windows user and you plan to continue to be a Windows user, you will eventually, just like you moved to Win95, Win98, and XP, and just like Mac users eventually moved to OSX whether they wanted to or not. You'll buy Vista now if you're an aficionado, or you want something pretty, or you have lots of documents and you'd like to search for them quickly, or just plain want something new and better. You won't get it now if you like XP, if your computer is old, if your workflow suits you, if you don't want to spend the money, if you're satisfied with whatever software you have at the moment and likely will be for the next year, or if you just love to hate Microsoft.

one of the things i liked about Vista is the ability to plug in a USBdrive and have it used as RAM memory - cool!

Dont get two excited first off. It doesnt use the USB Drive for files bigger then 4K thats right 4K. ALso ther drive has to be 256 MB or higher and pass a certain speed test.

Huh? If you're referring to ReadyBoost, the technology that uses a flash drive to cache memory manage data to essentially speed up the system, then you won't be using the drive to store files. It will only be used for the ReadyBoost cache, and only stores encrypted memory data. If you're referring to how Vista stores files generally on flash drives, you're wrong about the file size.

I like this one:

6. Vista may be the best reason yet to buy a Mac

actually i wouldn't mind switching over to the mac OS (not the hardware) if it would run my favourite online games and a few other LAN-party games. My single player ones would come in second. And thirdly, I just wish all those nifty little hack tools would run on the mac too, but since they are low-level programs, i doubt even the emulator would run :( too bad. maybe someday when i'm very old and find no interest in these things, i'll switch (single mouse button on the mac is good for old fingers)
