not to be pedantic, but how does a 'method' differ from a style?

Well, let me know when you decide. In the meantime, I've had enough of your condescending attitude.

Chill, dude. Just sharing my opinion.

Wow...lots of heated arguments in the last 24 hours!

I have been working very hard to learn the technicals of photography, especially in the ways of lighting...studio lighting in particular. I have used a lot of solid backgrounds in doing so, especially black and white ones, but I do so because to me, it visually enhances the play of light and shadow, making it all the easier for me to learn.

I think its wise to study both environmental and solid background techniques. In many ways, yes, an environmental photo can tell a lot about a subject, and can tell a story in and of itself. I can also see the benefits of an "absent" background. The eye is drawn to the subject and focused on it alone, without distractions, which often helps denote the technical difficulties and strengths of a photo.

to be honest I feel you started the topic off with a condescending attitude.

As I said in another post why do people always look for reasons not to like something than for reasons to like something.

edited: you and I have argued in the past and this is not the place to do it so I shall stop here.

Everyone has the right to vote any way they see fit. It would just be nice if they kept it to themselves sometimes.

There's not a single shot in this post that doesn't "work" for me, whether it's white, black, or something you can reach out and touch. They're all backgronds. This whole discussion is about personal preference. One persons isn't any better than the next. It's nice we can all have our own, isn't it?

edit:spelling (there's probably more mistakes :D )

Toss in a bug glued to the gritty boob, and I think you might have a top 5.

You need a post to figure that out?

Here's the problem, agenkin: you don't know how to play well with others. Your points often get lost because of your high-handed attitude. Beat down your ego for a little while and consider there might be people with different opinions, and invite them to share their thoughts, and you'd be surprised at how pleasant it can be. There's plenty of room for thoughtful discussion and disagreement, but the tone in so many of your posts immediately makes many people stop listening.

Another point is this:

I was looking through my portfolio for an example and found this...

This was not in a studio nor was commercial in anyway. The background and capture was purely candid and natural. In fact the background was a hot-air balloon and if it had been extra detailed with the surroundings, I believe the focus would be drawn away from the emotion and honesty of the scene. My point is, the background looks very solid and studio-ish, yet it isn't. So I would suggest for everyone to remember that not everything is how it seems and as others have said, try to appreciate the purpose and goal behind the photographer's image.

Not to hijack the tread or anything, but this brings up a good point. What is the ultimate image?

A photo of Judi on the shores of that famous purple beach with some joey grunge tossed in?

Well not all boobs are created equal, and I am sure that somebody has put together a boob voting scale.

By ultimate, are you meaning the most derivative, unoriginal mash-mash of continually overused themes in challenge entries ? bless your heart.
