OK, so I'm contemplating purchasing a new lens(es) sometime in the future.

Currently, I have my choice narrowed down to:

Nikkor 18-200mm VR

or ...

A combo of Nikkor 18-135mm (D80 kit lens) and Nikkor 70-300mm VR.

The prices come out about the same and I've read reviews on all three of the lenses. Since this is my first major lens purchase, I was wanting some expert opinion/advice on which direction I should go. I know the immediate appeal of the just the Nikkor 18-200mm would be just a single, great all-around lens, but I fear I could miss the extra 200-300mm range. Should I worry about this range? I've read where most lenses tend to underperform near max zoom.

Thanks for any help. :)

what / where will you primarily be shooting?

The 18-200 is so limited and hard to find you may find yourself waiting 6 months for it to become available. nice lens though.

Tries the 18-135 in a store in UK and didn't think that much of it to be honest and as for the PLASTIC 70-300 VR don't waste your money.

Solution - Buy used, I have the 24-120 VR and it's absolutely brilliant, you already have the 18-55 kit, that is not a bad lens at all.

The 70-300 you have now is not bad either but lacking that VR feature right?

Buy a used 80-400 VR if you can or a used 80-200 f2.8 AFs and a 2X adapter then you will have a nice range and super fast too. VR is ok but it really depends on what you are shooting. VR is good for stationaryo bjects or things that dont move a lot, if you try to shoot a kid playing ball in the street using a slower VR lens the street will be sharp and the kids will be blurred, you stand more chance of getting it with a faster f2.8 lens and no VR..

What do you need it for?... 1st question

I'll be primarily shooting landscape, and I wantned a good travel kit ... not really into portrait shots at the moment. Fast moving action is not a real concern right now, so I was kinda shying away from the more expensive 2.8 variety. I basically want a sharp, fairly versitale lens. The 70-300 lens listed in my profile is not actually mine. I borrowed it for a bit from a friend and used it on some trips. So anything beyond the 18-55mm kit lens is an upgrade for me :)

I read Tom's review //www.bythom.com/18200lens.htm and he seemed to really enjoy it.

I'll check into the 24-120 VR and 80-400 VR.

Thanks a bunch for your help!
