That's good advice, but in practical experience, I prefer to assume that if I tread the line too closely, I will suffer all the pessimistic consequences I can imagine, therefore, it's a good idea for me to think twice, enter once!

Posting the pictures and asking what people think of it before a challenge might be ok to some. I am not saying it is wrong. I want to get a ribbon like the rest of you but when I ribbon or if I ever ribbon it will because I had my own opinion about my work and liked it before the voting started. I appreciate everyones comments and time they take during the voting to let me know about my work and have used it to better my work. This is just my opinion.

Don't forget that DPC has date restrictions; from the time a challenge is announced to the time the challenge starts is only 7 days. That doesn't leave much time for online opinions before the challenge submission date!
Also consider that many DPCers enter the same image in several online competitions. All competitions vary in how an image in rated and there is generally no conflict.
Bottom line: It is a non-issue!

It is an interesting debate you have going here. I've noticed similar shots to challenge entries - maybe outtakes - uploaded in the 'recently uploaded' space, before the voting has ended. I didn't pay it too much mind - just a "hmmm... that looks familiar, now I know who's shot that is in the challenge". I have seen that quite a bit.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and if it results in me being kicked off DPC then so be it.

I'm the one peetje is talking about. he was so kind as to send me a PM, about this.

here's the thing:

I took a photo for a challenge. I had it in two versions, one B&W one in colour. I couldn't make up my mind. Without telling people what it was for I posted the pictue on a Dutch photography forum, and in a thread that is very long, and very old. I had to search through 6 pages before finding the thread. so it's not like it got big exposure.
I asked people their opnion which one they preferred. Then some detailed comments came and I explained what the photo was for.

I wasn't looking for people to vote for my photo. I just wanted to see which one they liked best, because there are a lot of good photographers there and I value their opinion.

I allready removed the photo and have asked the moderators of that forum to remove the links in the quotes of the people who quoted my post. So everything will be deleted.

I do hope I'm not gonna get in trouble for this because I honestly didn't know this was not done.

I will never do it again! Sorry!

Challenge entry's on the web before they're submitted.

I'm fairly new here, and more of a visitor than a participant of DPC, but i would like to discuss something:

I'm watching this site for about six months now, and i've noticed that some members are posting there challenge submissions on other sites on the web, this prior to submitting them here. Mostly done to make a more conscious selection trough other opinions. I believe this is not a rules violation but it's not very ethical (me thinks). But lately i see another form of: linking photo's to challenge members. I noticed some forum posts prior to a challenge and the same day a saw the matching photo. The person in question spoiled already the title which the entry is going to have. This title is a direct link with some forum posts here on DPC. So when the entry is cleared for voting most of you will know which person has made that entry! Feels wrong to me?

Maybe a making to much of to little, and it's just the way this site works. But give it some thoughts.

WHo is lazy to not register for 5 and a Half months?

Its funyn when people ask questions that stir up anger or could get someone in trouble. A new name appears the first thing they do is post in a thread and have a nice little story see it on so many forums.

well I was kinda wondering what he gained by doing this.

I mean he's not competing in any challenges, doesn't have a camera (according to the profile)

and again..it's not like I was trying to get people to vote for me. if I wanted to do that i would've posted it on a much bigger forum I also visit. I really just wanted some opinions wheter it was nicer in B&W or in colour.

I do however appreciate he sent me a PM about this thread. And I'm not the type to silently watch this thread knowing it's about me.

People do it all the time, don't sweat it. As long as you're not direct linking to your entry page and asking people to vote for it, you're not breaking any rules.

This thread could get quite nasty - finger pointing and blaming. I have never appreciated it when people jump in from nowhere making accusations. I for one would like to see this thread closed and let our esteemed SC handle this issue, if there is an issue at all.

I, for one, believe Puckzzz - her character and involvement on this site proves that.

You shared 2 versions in a very different virtual world from here and is far less in anyone's sight than many members have been doing for years on sites like smugmug and pBase.
I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Geez, when did DPC become the only place to discuss photos on the Web?

I regularly post the same photos here and at dailyawards.com, betterphoto.com, and elsewhere. And ya know what? Sometimes I even post potential free study entries there to see the reaction before choosing what to enter here. I don't mention DPC, but I do seek feedback. *GASP*

I fail to see the harm in it.

Now, I also, ONCE, put some shots into a DPC forum to get feedback that I eventually entered: the battle of the sexes challenge. I had no intention of entering any of them in that challenge when I posted them in the forum. However, as the deadline approached and I never got around to shooting my various ideas, I figured I'd go for it with one of those. The first comment I got was from someone who'd seen it before. He wished me good luck.

I certainly wouldn't do that intentionally, but I also don't think that the mere fact that the 28 people who saw a given thread might recognize a shot means you should automatically not enter anything that was discussed. If people recognize it and want to vote lower because of it, of course that's their prerogative.

One last thing I want to say to peetje: don't worry a bit about raising the questions for discussion. They're perfectly reasonable. I'm astounded that people are now questioning your motives or asking why it took you so long to register. Don't you people keep busy enough running your own lives?!?

I knew it would all come back to me...it always does. If you would read my posts carefully, i didn't acuse anyone, i wanted a open discussion about it if it's done or not done. That's all, the members which first responded are telling me i should take it to the SC. I didn't do that for reasons explained. I also explain that i'm only a visitor, not only a this site but on many photo related sites. So i made an observation nothing more and bring it to you guys and girls for en open debate. That some other opinions on this topic are reflecting on me is not fare to say at least, I was open minded and respectful in my posts, i didn't react the way members i wanted to be. Instead i did the honorable thing and contacted the person in question, to get a opinion.

As i stated earlier i have indeed nothing to gain, and i did not even become registered if this topic wasn't on my mind. And i can see all the photo's here without being a member (duhh).

I truly fell sorry for this topic because for me it was about a discussion and not about pointing fingers.

Hahhh well.

Well I see you've only been around since last June, Jeff (if that is your real name), and I wonder how long you've had that beard (if it is a real beard)....

Yeah you can't trust anybody. For a while I thought Art was human but turns out he's a terminator sent from the future to do god knows what.

don't worry about it. I don't think it's backfiring to you. You just asked a simple question and opinions - as allways - are different about it.
I sent you some PM's. I have no hard feelings, in fact I thought it was nice of you to point it out to me as I never considered it might've been wrong.

and to add to that... I didn't even get the anwsers I was looking for, they just confused me more because they're opnions were also very different LOL :-D

Guess you missed the PBS documentary about his mission here. And all of the sequels.

As it's an issue that's been raised earlier in this thread, I have a suggestion...

If you are going to enter one of your portfolio pics in a challenge, then I'd like it to be mandatory for the pic to be hidden from the time you enter it until voting has finished. There is a least one pic in the 'Best of 2006' that was visible in a gallery for the entire duration of the voting.
