w00t! Who wants in?!

Seriously, great post. Serving on Site Council is often a very trying ezperience, and the selection process is not about rewarding people for participation. We're looking for people whonot only participate, but through their participation have shown tht they are confident expressing their opinions, but are also comfortable having those opinions questioned, supporting them, and working toward a compromise for the good of the group. We're also looking for people who have demostrated their ability to maintain cmposure and a civil demanor, even when engaged in a polarizing discussion, or when facing the harshest of personal attacks.

There are very positive aspects of the job, but anyone who has applied, or is considering doing so, should carefully read and reread Bernard's post. It rings true more than you know.

Yea, sometimes it amazes me that SC members like ClubJungle can maintain their composure.

Myself, Muckpond, Ursula and Blemt (both since retired) were added in April 2005. Kiwiness also returned to active duty briefly last year.

ARE YOU READY FOR ALL THAT CRAP????

hmmm. all this AND a free membership? i'm there!

I found the complimentary whisky and Australian masseuse more than compensated from the brickbats thrown by the plebs. I had to quit in the end because I was growing so fat on all the free chocolates and beer.

The Canon & Apple sponsorship of the SC is also nice.
Always good to get decent free gear.

You forgot to say, "Go Colts!" at the end of that sentence. ;)

These people are dedicated. These people are real. Yes, they make mistakes, but they then have to help find the solutions. SC is WORK. Plain and simple.

Umm....

Don't tar all of us "Out Here" with the same brush.

There are, I'm sure, quite a few of us who have been president of that club, in charge of this or that at the church, site council elsewhere....I was a list administrator at another site and I am *quite* aware of what this entails, and so becasue of it have a deep and abiding respect for SC.

You can pretty much figure that this would be a thankless job if you think about it.....you're not going to get into it for the fame and fortune.

I know that what my experience has led me to is being better behaved and maintaining a reputation of NOT being a PITA because I know better.

So my suggestion for behavior is...."How would SC deal with this post were it dumped in their lap?"

So go for looney, not abrasive, keep 'em on their toes!

To add to this, from an ex-Site Council's point of view,

It is also a good place to be. The people at SC are intelligent, outspoken, sometimes opinionated, but always supportive and ready to look at things from other's point of view. Even scalvert, maybe especially scalvert :)

I'm happy "on the outside", but there have been days in the last couple months (since I resigned) that I miss it a lot, the company, the exchange of ideas, the trying to figure out how someone did something to be able to validate the image, the funny things that happen. I think it would be a great source of satisfaction for anyone here who's been around for a while and cares about the site to be part of Site Council. A fair bit of time, yes, and frustration, but also a lot of joy and satisfaction.

I must say I am really curious as to who the 3 new SC will be.

Now, where's that "Ex-SCs Club"? That's one gripey bunch, let me tell you :)

Good grief.

On the contrary, props to all the homies that make up SC for a tough job well done.

Those of you who aspire to be involved should be advised that you have to have a butt made of steel, because everybody wants to chew on it. You have to have perfect wisdom, because your every thought, action, and opinion will be dissected, second guessed, and evaluated a million times over to make sure that you have "done right".

Your attitude will be questioned. Your dedication to the site will be insulted. You will be personally insulted. Your preferences about rules will be called self serving. Your beliefs about post processing will be attacked time and time again. You will be thought of as "them". You will be asked to recode the site to serve the interests of some poor person who thinks you own the place and should do his bidding, and then you will be forced to reply tactfully.

You will need to find solutions to problems that you previously had no idea even existed. You may no longer be a total dick in the forums, because the weight of the site will be on your shoulders. You will be required to enforce rules you do not agree with. You will need to compromise and disqualify pictures that you personally think are legal, and vice versa. It will be your job to maintain peace, where once you could slice and dice with the best of them.

If you have ever been at odds with Site Council in the past, you will need to be mature enough to lock those things into the past and become team members and coworkers with folks you may despise. You will not suddenly be a god; the site will not change at your whim. You may not, in most cases, make unilateral, uncounseled decisions, especially at first.

You will find that there are hundreds, even thousands, of things to consider about DPC that you once knew nothing of. You will no longer be such a popular person; you will be expected to solve every problem, respond to tickets within minutes, and spill no blood. You can no longer tell someone "I don't like you"; you will carry a responsibility to the owners of the site to help promote the business and make it a more profitable resource.

You may learn things you do not like; as an SC member, you will have to learn to DEAL with those things, rather than firing up a new forum post complaining about how the site is all screwed up. You will have to put up with comments like the one from Mr. Setzler, a former SC member who apparently holds little respect for his former teammates. Your spouse and children will become upset with you because you devote way too much time to those ungrateful rascals that make up DPC. You will wind up responding to tickets and moderating forums when you are supposed to be working on a real job.

No one will really love you anymore; everyone will treat you with either a false respect or a real hatred. You will trust no one because you will not know if they are really your friend or if they are smoozing up to you. You will have to learn to respond to "the same old arguments" with a progressive, open mind, while still remaining polite and gentle. You will, by default, be held responsible for decisions of SC well before your tenure, and you will learn not to insult or criticize fellow SC members publicly, as you might need their support at some time in the future.

These people are dedicated. These people are real. Yes, they make mistakes, but they then have to help find the solutions. SC is WORK. Plain and simple.

It would be easy to think you will have finally "arrived" to win a position on SC, but the game is much bigger than that. It's really work. SC is not a reward for being an involved site member. It's a job that requires you to LOVE the site. These folks can't just "contribute what I can"; they have to give all. An hour a day? Forgive me while I smile. Try 3 or 4. And that's outside of any photographic pursuits you may have on the site. Continual committment.

ARE YOU READY FOR ALL THAT CRAP????
