I don’t usually show my dark side but I am pissed right now. Not at anyone but at myself. I have ran the WPL for almost a year and enjoy it a lot, so much I purchased a hosting account, domain name, books on PHP, Apache, MySQL, CSS, and HTML. I have read and tried my hands at coding just to find out I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. So for now I am going to take down everything at www.worldphotoleagues.com until I can accomplish what I have set out to do. It may be a month or two or even a year, but I will learn and have a good site one day for everyone to enjoy. I don’t know what I was thinking when I thought I could do the coding alone. It’s just too much, too much!

I will continue to run the WPL through season four and the 2007 Free Study Marathon. But I am so depressed that my brain cannot grasp the concept of building a dynamic website. Sorry everyone, the last thing I want to do I let anyone down but I feel like have done just that.

Southern Gentleman (sometimes)!!

Okay, seriously people, someone out there needs to help Scott out. I am not that man, my kung fu is weak.

Edit, scott, I'd contact smurfguy to see if he's interested. His KungFu is stong, like OX.

you know, I have never participated because I have too much stuff going on in my life to add a lot (I haven't even entered a challenge in a while) so from an outsider's point of view... I can't even believe you made it this long. The tasking you gave yourself was so huge. I don't know if people even realized the huge amount of work you have been doing for free. We all owe you a great deal of gratitude. Thank you.

Scott, I would not be too frustrated with myself, if I were you. PHP/MySQL are TOUGH to learn and tougher to implement. Even with the open source packages available, forming them into a coherent site is a formidable task.

I admire people like Langdon that can start from scratch and constantly improve a "live" website.

SG, I am fairly new here and I have watched how you have handled the WPL With humongous success! It has made me so excited to participate. It is so well organized and managed that I assumed it was controlled by more than one person. I wish I knew more so I could help you out! I completely understand how you can be so overwhelmed. If there is anything I can do to help out, let me know. I don't know much but Im willing to assist.

I've done some coding in both PHP and ASP using mySQL in the past. My learning curve may be a bit steep if I get back into it, but I'm willing to lend a hand as well. Let me know.

I thought the site was just fine. It must not of been what you wanted. I wish I could help but I was not trained by master Yoda. The forum was looking nice also.

I hope that you can absorb everything you need to and feel better about it. Practice makes perfect and I thought the site was pretty much there.

I think I remember that you did a post not long ago saying that you were going to start learning all that stuff in one go? That's a lot to manage to be honest.

Anyway, if you want any assistance with managing certain areas of a dynamic site, drop me a PM. Currently my main area of focus is databases, but I've worked with PHP and Apache and all that other stuff in my time too, so may be able to answer a number of your questions, debug pieces of code, etc..

Thank you, Thank you all for your support. I'm feeling a little better today after taking some time to step away. I may have to take a few of you up on your offer from time-to-time. If thats no problem.

Thanks to yanko for a wonderful new WPL logo.

Also Ken art roflmao does this for a living.....If you can get him to do it I will donate some money to pay him for it.

2 thoughts:

1:You could have a contest with some money involved (partly a prize, partly a donation to you). If it was transparent I don't think anyone would have a problem with it ... and I know it's more exciting for people when they smell prizes.

2: I don't do web-pages, but I can help with any graphics you might need. I know the feeling of being frustrated with web stufff ... anyone who went to metatate.com would see the spoils of a frustrated person to the point of apathy.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Steve. "Automating things to make life easier" is my middle name. =)

But websites are still a ton of work, as I'm finding out with my PPChallenge site.

Scott and I have been in communication - hopefully I'll be able to help! WPL has been a lot of fun, and brought a good-natured competitive spirit to DPC... it'd be a shame for it to go away.

Cheers,
-Jeff

The honesty and acknowledgement of your frustration is admirable, but no so much as your selfless attempt to run a program which gives a lot of us some fun and competition. You do what you want, but no matter what, up to this point, your effort is recognized and truly appreciated.

I PM'd you of my data scraping and database capabilities in a PC/Microsoft environment.

It seems like a lot of people in their own WPL forums are questioning when WPL4 will start. I thought it was supposed to start on Jan 29. Is it still going to happen, or is it down for good?

Since I'm not the only one wondering... one more bump?

The last I heard it was still a go, with the member's challenge being posted at rollover tomorrow midnight as the first of the three Week 1 challenges.

My day job is a lead programmer/developer for a private retail website. We mainly deal in Micro$oft (asp and aspx), but I have worked on a few php sites for fun.

I might be able to help out some. My website (I programmed a few years ago) is still up and running. I uses asp and M$SQL. I'd let you know what my website is, but I'm afraid what the traffic will do. It's a server in the other room on a cable modem. PM me if you're interested in help. I'll try to monitor that mail account (also ran on the same server).
