I live in Europe myself but I have family on (work-)vacation near LA. As I've been saving money for a D200, I thought they might be able to take one along for me. But.. I don't know any shops in that area!

So are there any good shops closeby?
Or should I order online and let it be sent to them?
Also, I have no clue how that works with the tax-system inside the US. Could anyone enlighten me on that front?

Thanks a lot already.

You could always but it online from B&H or possibly Buydig.com, and have it shipped to their address. Not sure if that would work with the EU credit card though :/

edit- depending on how long the work-vacation is I mean.

Way back in the 70's-80's we used to get our best deals at Samy's. I don't know how they stack up now, no recent experience, but here's their locations:

They have 3 weeks left, so shipping is an option. (if everything is in stock)

Bear_music: the store looks fine but they give no price for the d200 on their site and the store-prices are different from those online... so that's a bit vague altogether.

Another good shop is Silvio's. It's in Torrance. Like Bear_Music said, Samy's is great too (and maybe a little cheaper).

As bear mentioned, Samy's is a photographer's mecca.

You also might try the Calumet store on Highland, in Hollywood. It's just a bit north of Samy's. Calumet also has a store in Santa Ana and another in Santa Barbara.

I love my local Samy's. They are well stocked and have a friendly, knowledgeable sales staff that is very helpful. (Our local store also has good parking!) However, the prices in their stores are usually higher than the prices they have on their website by quite a bit. Also, if you buy in or ship to a California address, you will be paying California sales tax which varies depending on what county you are in, but hovers around 8%. OTOH, Samy's sometimes has sales during which they pick-up the tab for the sales tax. You might get lucky.

If I were really going to save money and knew exactly what I wanted, I would order from B&H and have it shipped to California.

This is my personal opinion and worth every penny of what you are paying for it.

Yes, I do buy, but not everything, from my local Samy's -- especially when they are paying the sales tax.

I'm considering 17photo.com and beachcamera.com now. They both seem reasonably cheap and offer a 3 year (international!!) extended warranty.

I found both of them with nextag.com

If I buy/order from another state, I avoid taxes?
Confusing systems you have :p

I am not sure if this is an option at LAX but I have been at a few airports that had duty free stores that carried cameras and other electronic gizmos. That is one way to avoid the tax.
