Hey guys. I'm curious about your own situation.

I had one wisdom tooth that came out a while back and I got it pulled last week because it had a small cavity. The X Ray showed that I had none on the bottom, and the top right one was impacted a bit.

What about you guys? How many, and do you still have them?

4 and I still have them all

I had three of mine pulled out just before I got braces as a kid. They left the last one in and I've had no problems with it.

Had 4, badly impacted, had 'em taken out in bits and pieces, cuz the roots were all entwined and that's the only way he could get 'em.
NOT fun, but I'm glad they're gone after years of them surfacing, disappearing, resurfacing, etc. etc. ad infinitum.

It's always seemed to be common belief that humans are evolving without wisdom teeth, but there's some discussion that it's the second incisors that are going, as we need the grinding teeth more than the tearing ones.

I hadn't even heard of that or thought of the logic of it until the dentist pointed out that my son was missing his second incisors. He's also the only one in the family with straight teeth because he's got the room for the rest.

Sooo... you got all your incisors instead? :)

I have 0. Two were impacted and they removed the others at the same time. Lost a small bit of jaw as well when they were removed. Then during healing I got 3 dry sockets. Very much not fun.

I had my top two taken out a long time ago at different times, and I've only got one in the bottom (the other one has never appeared).

All 4 pulled/cut-out/ripped-out/chiseled-out in about 1978.
Never know it though....

OOOH! OOOH! Pick me, I'm a dental assistant! haha...ahem
I find it very strange that your dentist decided to pull it out when it only had a small cavity. If there is room in your mouth, there's no reason to have them pulled. I have a feeling he just pulled it to make it even. However, if they are impacted they can end up moving the rest of your teeth and making them crooked. If he says he wants to remove the impacted one, then have him remove the other upper one as well (that is, if you have both on top).

I had all of mine removed 2 years ago (I was 16) because they were all bony impacted. Ugh, I had to have my picture taken for school 4 days later

Wait, I'm confused. Which teeth did you originally have, and which ones were pulle? LL, LR, UR, UL?

Had all 4 cut out a few years ago.

I only had 2, but now they're gone.

Had all 4 of mine removed when I was 15 on the same day as my brother and sister. Just found out my 13-year-old daughter's wisdom teeth are impacted and need to come out too.

I wonder what people used to do before wisdom teeth extraction began. I imagine they used their molars to chew more than we do today, which contributed to wisdom teeth coming in properly. Hmm...

My orthodontist told me when I had braces that I had four of the biggest wisdom teeth he had ever seen in his career (and this was right before he retired), and that all of them were impacted. I had to have four permanent teeth removed so all of my molars could come in and I could get braces, so if they had started coming in, it would not have been pretty.

They never gave me any difficulty, but we had them surgically extracted before I went off my mom and dad's insurance when I was like 24. (12 years ago).

I had four, now I have none. They were coming in all kinds of screwy ways, so I had them taken out when I was 18. They put me under to do it, I went to sleep and woke up in the recovery room quite a while later with my mouth full of gauze. The surgeon evidently had to break them apart with some kind of crushing tool. The swelling and not being able to eat real food sucked, but the high-octane pain meds made it better.

When I was about 20, my dentist at the time told me that they all need to come out and that they were coming in crooked. He scheduled appointments to have them removed. It would have been a big thing. As the date approached I became more and more nervous. I cancelled the appointment and thought I would go back when they started to hurt.

After about 15 years waiting for my wisdom teeth to impact, I figured I would go to a new dentist because of a sharp pain in a tooth every time I ate chocolate. I did get one cavity in those 15 years without the aid of a dentist. I now go regularly for cleanings but haven't had any new cavities. Oh yeah, my previous dentist always found at least 3 cavities every six month visit.

Be very careful of dentists. I hope no one here is a dentist. I don't mean to offend the profession, but I put a lot of bread on that dentist's dinner table.

I still have all mine, unlike this poor unfortunate.

I don't have any wisdom teeth, never did. My brother only has (or had, I don't know) two. I also still have a baby tooth, and I think my bro has two.

Still have all my wisdom teeth and all others too, save one that decided to escape during a hockey game when I was a young fella.

If you ever wonder about the origins of Hockey, I have heard it was initially devised by a group of dentists. :0)

Mine were starting to come in crooked, and all four had to come out. The dentist shattered the bottom ones and picked out the pieces, and twisted out the upper ones, and still had to go to work that night!

i have all 4 and they came in fine (me with a big mouth? who knew?), but my greedy dentist wants to take them because they have a few small cavities.

he says that they're too far back to brush properly and keeps threatening that they will rot to the point that he can't pull them.

i think he just sees a big juicy insurance check. i need a second opinion.

If he really wanted your money, he would do the restorations, then extract them later if he's so sure they will fail, instead of just charging you for the extractions first. He is right though; third molars are tough to keep clean. If you want to keep them, then all you have to do is keep them clean. Current research shows electric toothbrushes remove plaque better than manual toothbrushes and many of them (especially Oral B Triumph) have nice small heads that you can stick way back there. And don't forget to floss.
