WOW - by my reckoning there are up to 60 participants signed up for this challenge - a big HIGH 5 to shannylee13 for coming up with the idea!
So I'm thinking a daily thread might work best rather than clog this thread, as in Where I live Day 1 thread and so forth - anyone else think so?

I like the idea of a new thread for each day. I think it will be easier to keep up with.
I'm looking forward to this! |

I don't know. 30 threads is a lot for one subject.
I would suggest starting one thread on February 1st titled "Where I Live 30 Day Challenge" or something equally creative (ahahah), then just post to that continually. If you have one thread per day, and someone misses posting on day 2, 3, 4 so he/she decides to post all three plus #5, that would make 4 threads on the front page.
Also, because of the different time zones and stuff, your day 2 may be my day 1, etc. etc. I think a thread a day would just get cumbersome. |

yea but at 60 posts a day (just for the pictures) that would be nearly 1,800 posts in that thread - not including comments. No matter what with this many participants I think it's likely to get a bit unwieldy.

It's not easy.
Speaking from the SC point of view, if more than one thread on the "same subject" show up on the home page at one time, there will be reports about it sent to us. The only way it might conceiveably work is to have the thread locked at a certain time each day so that only one a day is being posted to.
Perhaps a compromise may be to have two or three threads. The first half/third, the second half/third and the last third.
Ten days into it, if all 60+ are still participating, we can lock the first thread and start "Where I Live Part II" then later "Where I Live Part III" or whatever. |

holy smokes 74 people thus far. COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! :)
yah. we're obviously going to have to have more than one thread. like karmat said... we'll start with "Where I Live Part I" and go from there depending on participation, etc. :) |

Is there room for one more? I know Louisville, KY is already represented but theres room for two I think.
Lately the only time my camera comes out is to take some product photos for work.
This 30 day challenge is exactly the inspiration that I was looking for to do something creative.

Suggestion:
How about a new thread each week?
That would keep the number of threads down and no one would have a reason to post in more than one...
There are almost exactly 4 weeks in Feb so I figured that would only be 4 threads with about 518 pics in each one...
Just a suggestion... :)
Jojo
edit for math :P

I think it's a great idea to show off where you live and it seems so do a lot of other people. |

Thanks mystopia. It will be interesting to campare. I might try to reshoot a few that I've already done but I want to come up with mostly new stuff for this. |

I cannot believe the amount of participants in this challenge. I hope that I receive at least one comment for the entire 30 days. I have a feeling that with so many, we will get lost in the no comment mill. I hope everybody keeps that in mind, and looks at where comments have not been made, and make an effort to help out those who get few or no comments.
As to making this idea more manageable, I think the best compromise is one thread a week, then lock it. This will keep us on our toes and for those of us who lag behind, we just won't be able to post. Since I don't know what emergency may arise in my month, I am sure I will end up being one of the laggers, though I am really going to try my best to get one post per day, mostly new stuff. This should be fun, and I really can't wait to start seeing the images of all the geographic locations participating here. Now, I am also hoping to look at all your portfolios a lot more, see your stuff beyond challenges, and hopefully be able to make a lot of comments beyond the challenge.

Why not require that all comments be attached to the pic itself and not made inside the thread. Or maybe that's ow it is always done. |

Did I miss something? when did this become a comment on peoples "30 days of where I live challenge" challenge? I will not have time to comment on all those pictures and I'm sure I am not the only one. Just thought I would point that out ;-)

Comments aren't required but it is in the spirit of such a challenge that you comment on as many as you are able. These challenges are designed for fun and learning. Giving and receiving comments is part of that process. |

I don't think that it needs it. Commenting in such a challenge really helps bond the participants and provides a spur to continue and even to make more comments of one's own.

commenting is cool, but i mainly like these themes as a spur to creativity. if a resulting picture inspires someone to comment, great. commenting for the sake of commenting is friendly and all, but for the less verbose amongst us, it can be kind of a drain. |

I'm looking forward to this, I just wish it were not so cold here. 23F, feels like 17, and snowing. I went out to try to get a macro of the snow and my hands hurt for 20 minutes after I came in (and I was only out about 5 minutes!) Couldn't even use my fingers to adjust my tripod. It might be some quick shots for the first few days! |

Now is your chance! A few comments and no votes--just a chance to share some of your world with the rest of us! Hope you post a few. |

Chicago is going to be plenty cold this month too; winter arrived a little late this year. What's a good way to keep a white sky from not looking so blown out? Indoor shots?

Sounds like a good opportunity to give HDR a try.
