I plan to buy a D50 kit this weekend/today from Cametta Camera on ebay.

My question is, which is the better lens and why:

Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens

photo linked to amazon for more info

or

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Zoom Lens

photo linked to amazon for more info

I know nothing about lenses.. so a few pros and cons would be great :) My only financial pro and con is that the sigma is slightly more expensive but has better reviews on amazon. Is there really much difference?

I own an older version of the Tamron and it is sllllllllllllooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww. I used to use it in manual focus because it hunted and couldn't track well at all with AF on.

I Own the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro for Canon and think it is some of the best-spent money I have ever managed.

Macro mode - The above were all full-frame shots

Midrange

Far

I'll agree with santaspores ... I have the sigma and am very happy with it ... get the APO version though ... it's Sigma's 'professional' glass ...

EX is Sigma's professional glass.
APO signifies an apochromatic lens which reduces chromatic aberration.

I own a similar tamron, but I can tell you I wish I owned the nikkor 70-300. The tamron is noisy, slow and sometimes gets very confused when the light is not real bright. I however love the macro on it. I use that all the time when hiking. I don't know if I will buy a tamron again or not. The price is right. That is for sure.

teh APO version from sigma is a good lens, a great value. Not sure the current price, but $220 or so last time I checked. I had the lens and liked it. (sold it to get a 70-200 2.8)

I don’t know anything about the Tamron but I have had the Sigma in the past and it was a pretty decent lens for the money. The focus was a bit slow on my rebel but the optics were quite decent.

so... most people would prefer this Sigma over this Tamron lens?

I don't understand anything about AF, APO, DG, Di, LD or any of that.. but these are the two I have to choose from.

Thanks

I have that Sigma. I bought it in a kit with a 24-75 for like 150(if cameta still has that) the lenses are pretty cheep. They are the type that you pretty much HAVE to use on auto because they slip out of focus, especially when shooting downward. I like the 70-300 alot. The quality is really good for considering the price paid.

You quite sure you want to go with such a long focal length lens?

While your suggested lenses may be good ones, but you'll miss the wide angle range, and midrange, unless you already have it covered with alternatives.
I also have the D50, and recently the Sigma 70-300, and a few others. Of these, by far, the most versatile is my Tamron 28-75. And of course, the basic Nikon 50mm f1.8......cheap, and wonderful.

Think about these, if you dont have this focal length range yet covered.

I have the Tamron lens and love it. Check out the DPC "Equipment" section for photos from the Tamron lens (and others).

Is there a particular reason these are the only 2 you are choosing from? Sometimes our finances are not in the best of shape and we tend to let that be the determining factor (been there, done that). There are a few lenses that, for a few more dollars, you would be happier with. Ask yourself:
1. Can you squeeze out another $100-200 more someway (I gave up another hobby and sold my stuff)?
2. Do you NEED a 300mm or can you 'get away' with something a bit wider (200mm, 150mm, etc)?
True, you will get some good shots with either of those 2 lenses. But, after looking through you profile, I think you will outgrow it pretty quickly.
Here are links to the complete list of Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and Nikon lenses available.

Thanks everyone. I do already have the wide angle, midrange lens covered, I was asking specifically for the long range lens for a sporting event. And the reason I was only asking about these two lenses in particular is because they are part of a kit, I can choose a Tamron or a Sigma kit with both short and long range lenses.

Thanks again everyone, Sigma it is.

A note about Cameta. I bought a lens adapter from them on Ebay. About 15 minutes after ordering it, I found it on Amazon for less--and it was being offered by Cameta! So check prices in both places.

I know you just decided on the Sigma, which is a good lens, but I also wanted to show you some Tamron photos. I shoot sports with my Tamron 75-300--see my portfolio as well as my external one (under the Sports gallery).
