Free studies are such fun challenges to look through - a little of everything! And there are some really fine shots that for whatever reason get lost in the crowd.

Post your choice of "gems" from December's free study (though not your own entry, please.)

I didn't get to vote in this one, so I'm going through them all now. This shot is about as delightfully wonderful as they come. Incredible timing and light, great use of motion, and an adorable, expressive subject.

I agree with your choice.

I think i'll have to go for this one as being underrated to me;

This is just absolutely stunning and should have had the blue ribbon if there was any justice.

I second that. Vermeer himself couldn't have that made better if he had had a camera.

What a shame this one only placed 41. IMO there's nothing on the entire front page that tops this. It was one of the few meaningful images in the Challenge and one of my few 10's. Not the usual stuff we see. Nice work gooc. WTG.

In addition to those previously mentioned...

I agree with Courtenay for this one ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444252.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444252.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

And I think the following were under rated also.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/445197.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/445197.jpg', '/') + 1) . This was my favourite from the challenge as well.

Yes I was fascinated by this one - left an extensive comment. Poorly judged IMO. This would make a lovely challenge topic: emulate the Fine Art Masters....wonder how many of us could do as well as this?

I agree with most of the ones posted above, but this one specifically I was surprised to see score so low at 239th place!

I thought this one was incredible. Great labyrinth feel. I forget the artist, but it reminds me of a famous drawing that has staircases going in all sorts of directions without regard to a common perspective.

In addition to the Vermeer portrait (which was my favorite), I also thought this image would've scored higher ...

While it's a very beautiful shot, it did not do better because of the quality of the light which IMHO is a tad harsh. ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Sher9204's version below has that special light quality on the other hand (again IMHO).

That's just it. A lovely shot, but the light and especially the headdress on top is overexposed. Even the facial tones are 1/2 stop too much. I think the best part of the shot is the scarf behind. Great shot, but could definitely be improved upon...

I couldn't believe the placement on this one!

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444274.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444274.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Some people commented that the skin was very unnatural and I agree but there are always portraits with this sort of skin quality doing well... I dunno. Not enough of a reason for it to go so low for me.
