Seems like almost the only images that do well here really "sparkle"
Okay, I'll take my medicine but I don't think my image ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444719.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444719.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' is a sub 5. I'm wrong of course because it is. :) I knew when I submitted that it might not be well received but I didn't expect to get "too grainy" comments as I thought it would be obvious the noise (aging) was added in PP.

It was a 9 from me - I love moody b/w grain and tend to bump them up a bit.
But you knew that it wouldn't score well, just like I knew that a photo of rotting strawberries wouldn't do well but we still enter in hope...

Not to highjack the thread or anything, But I do have to agree with ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' Jaxsond on this one. Take mine for example.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/438248.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/438248.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Not that I ever expected it to break 6 (just cant get that lucky), I surely didnt expect it to be sub 5.

Or any of these photos, I expected most of these to finish higher than they did:

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/441783.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/441783.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/445182.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/445182.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444623.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/596/thumb/444623.jpg', '/') + 1) . ' ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/34192/thumb/439542.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/34192/thumb/439542.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

I understand Post Processing weighs heavily on peoples mind as they go through and vote, but I think alot of us are caught up in the processing so much that we are not stopping to look at the photo for its compositional value.

sorry - the last pic you posted was a workshop photo of mine, not a challenge entry.

Don't want to sound mean but to me i thihnk all those scores fit.

Sounds blunt but hey.

on dpc the pictures with WOW factor sell. I personally think that if it does not have WOW factor in it, then just forget about the scores and appreciate the comments few people leave on the photo. There will be some people who will appreciate good image regardless whether it had WOW factor in it or not.

By the way, the picture is very good composition.

I probably would have given it a 5. The photo is very flat and the major culprit I see to causing that is that there's no whites. Free Study challenges are very hard to compete in. There's so many photos that unless your photo really stands out it won't score well. There were almost 500 entries in that challenge. Subtle photos will rarely be given a second glance.

Hi Jackson,

I'll have to agree with you - it is not sub 5. It's a wonderful photo that should have placed much, much higher. After a little more then 40 challenges under my belt - I'll have to say this. When it comes to voting on the 1-10 scale, I think it's just too easy for most people to vote a 5 and be done with it unless, like previously stated, something jumps out at them - the WOW factor. Then there's probably a mix of people that either think they are gods gift to photography or are just too new into the hobby to realize what they are looking at and vote soley on the fact that they like or don't like the photo with no regard to anything else. Me? I'll never understand why people vote the way they do.

I vote what I like highly and what I don't like lower. I guess so do most voters. Its just fairly obvious that if you smack the viewer with eye candy then theres a better chance of getting a 'like-it' rather than a 'don't like-it.

There's no skull-duggery, just plain common sense. If you want em to vote high, give em what they like!!

I would also have given the first photo a 4 or 5. You went way overboard with your USM there.
I always step away from my computer for at least an hour, and then return and look again at the photo.Sometimes even the next day, with a fresh look on things.

I didn't like the photo. I gave it a 4.
I think the photo just "tries" too hard and doesn't accomplish much.
The aging technique and composition are fine, just if those techniques weren't applied what would you have? I don't like photos that rely just on style/post to carry the photo.

I'm totally in line with you - and I gave it a 4 as well.

Gee, I couldn't disagree with this more. I don't think the photo tries hard at all. :) I mean that in a good way - I think the restraint of this image is touching, and the variable focus perfect. The post technique also has a light touch. Not sure I understand the comment about lack of whites. I wonder what the sentiment would have been had there been white in the form of blown highlights. :) I prefer images like this that are understated, and make you ask, "What's this about?" Great photograph.

Some of the scores are also lower because there were so many great images in this challenge that the ones that were not spectacular were just overshadowed and bumped a little lower than normal.
