can you crop an image so that it is a circlar or oval in shape (rather than the traditional square/rectangle cropping? Is this legal for a challenge?

FWIW, this image of mine was taken with the Nikon FC-E8 fisheye adapter on the Nikon 995. Since the image is circular to begin with, I used a circular crop. I actually had a DQ request on this image, however it was not DQ'd.

If your lens creates a circular image then that is fine becuase it is done in the camera. However, it does state in the rules:

"The use of any type of selection tool is prohibited except to select a non-feathered, non-anti-aliased rectangular area for cropping."

Well, I'm seeing all sorts of borders that defy the above rule. However, the rules on borders seem to have been relaxed. The way I read the rules, circular borders are now allowed, although I don't think they're a good idea in any way.

The rules were "relaxed" some time ago. But if you don't like them, don't use them. Just like everything else we do, it will sometimes work and sometimes not, but it's (almost) free to experiment!
