how do you save for web using PS elements 2.0? the tutorial is not for my software so its not helping me. It doesnt show on mine "desired file size" the only thing it has are pixel dimensions and even when i change them its not making it smaller. my file is 640X480 and under the photo it says 143.5k. i have no idea what else to do. i used to be able to submit by just resizing it to 640 and saving it.

thanks.

Sorry can't help you. I have PS CS2.

But maybe you can try downloading Irfanview, it's free and you can resize and save for web I think.

You can resize to 640 and then save a quality level 8 and you should be fine... it isn't as sophisticated as Save For Web, but on the web, very very little difference is seen between 150kb and 143kb

Sorry, I also use PS CS2, and never used Elements, so can't help further.

In the "save for web" window there should be 2 little arrows in circles. One is to the top right of the photo on the right and the other is on the top right across from it where you change the pixel dims. Click this one.

Elements 2 may not have the "save for web" feature. If not, you'll just have to use the jpg options in the "save as" window to achieve the final file size you want.

I have a question relating to the "save as" function in photoshop. When I choose the quality of the image, say an 8, it states the file size that the image will become. When I check the image on the desktop however, its always 100kb greater than what photoshop said. Also when I reduce the image quality by a point, the file size only decreases by 20kb. For example, in order to get this one photo down to 150kb I have to choose a quality of 3, and this seriously degrades my image quality. Is this usual? And how else would I go about doing this?

Another question that I have relates to the "Save for web" function. When I review the "Save for web" image and the "Save as" image the colors are quite different. The "Save for web" image is much brighter. Is this a good thing? Because I much prefer my "Save as" image.

Thanks

Photoshop's dialog attempts to predict the file size but, as you've seen, doesn't always get it right. The final image file size is dependent on the complexity of the image. Without the "save for web" feature, you're stuck with trial and error. Save for Web, BTW, actually runs the compression algorithm repeatedly to arrive at the desired file size. Save as just estimates.

Hi I use PS Elements 2.0 and usually always use the "Save for Web" Feature. There should be two text fields where you can resize the dimensions of your photo (i.e. 640px by 427px) and then I always set the jpeg quality to maximum and then adjust the quality slider until I get as close to 150kb as I can. It will say what kb the picture is at down at the bottom of the picture. I hope this Helps!

Right, but why is it that if I use save for web my image turns out brighter than the regular save as?

Save for Web may also be converting the colorspace to sRGB, which could result in a better (brighter?) image if you were starting in RBG.

ok i just tried this and i set the quality to maximum, but then when i use the slider and lower it, it automatically sets the jpeg quality to something lower causing my image to look like crap. i dont understand why this is so hard. i have submtted to challenges before and now this new thing is a pain in the ass.

I got one more question about "Save for web"!
I figured everything else out, but the only thing I dont get is when I save an image it does not keep the EXIF data. I do need to retain the EXIF data right?

Save for Web strips the EXIF

No, you don't need to retain it.

"Your submission must be: taken with a digital camera that records EXIF data"

The original needs to have the exif in case you're asked for validation. The submission itself does not. In fact, the submission, if it did retain the EXIF would be stripped of it once uploaded.
