Anybody in the minimalism challenge? How did everybody do in motion and Best of?

I entered the entrance challenge. Score is looking good right now but very few comments.

HI Team 80, I'm back from holidays and thanks for the useful posts on lenses. I'm loving my D80 and learning something new everyday; I started digital with a Kodak 6430, then used a nikon 8800 at work and a coolpix L4 which I dropped in the snow and have never found.

I try to enter as often as possible and am more consistently scoring in the low 5's which is an improvment for me. Although it is a lowly score for the DP community I'm happy with my improvement and I'm finding lots of photographic (volunteeer) opportunities in my local community. I coordinated a calendar for our local federal politician and 4 of my shots were chosen for the final calendar which was mailed out to the whole riding.

I'd like to buy a long zoom approx.80-200mm, does anyone have any favorites? Does VR really make a difference? I'm also looking for a lens to take photos of house interiors and exteriors for real estate, any experience with this type of lens?

Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for the real estate shots.
Nikon 70-300 ED on tripod, as good as the new VR, especially if you have DXO Optics Pro.

Hey fellow D80 users, would any of you mind commenting on some pics I have on flickr? Just joined about four days ago, no views, no comments, due to no talent. //www.flickr.com/photos/mattforbes/

is the D80 team any closer to getting a WPL spot??

We were the first alternate in case a team did not fill up. All teams were full by the deadline so no alternates were needed. Maybe next time.

Hey Matt,

My favorites in your flickr portfolio are Closed Factory & Jester Hat.

I like the color contrast in Closed factory. The large sky above the prison gives a feeling of isolation or smallness. Nice effect. This seems like it would be a great photo to play with in the area of cropping. The water tower is a great point of interest, you might consider doing a few crop variations and see what you get. I did so by holding up some pieces of paper and was pleased with some of the potential there. The only downside (and maybe this was intended) was the amount of grain in the sky of the full size version.

I loved the expression in the Jester Hat photo. Good use of shallow DOF here.

Not sure what you were going after with the color treatment on Christmas tree farm. I think this shot suffers a bit from too much going on as well. There isn't really a clear focal point. Just scattered mowing equipment and a shed.

I don't have a flickr account so I thought I'd add some of my thoughts here. Maybe we can stir up a little discussion in this thread :)

Hey folks, going to shoot a wedding this afternoon, at a co-worker's redneck cousins Church. Reception is at a public park. Never did the wedding photog thing, but I'm looking forward to it, just for the entertainment factor. My co-worker shoots with a Canon Rebel, took one class on photography at the local college, so he's the pro, I'm just the assistant. He is doing it for free, I'm not. My plan is to burn the best shots on a DVD with a water mark, and send to the happy couple. If they want to buy prints, I will give them prices. Having never met these people, but hearing about them, I can see a home made wedding album of pictures with my water mark across them. The Groom(19) is wearing a top hot and cane, the "limo" is his buddies' 2001 Mustang. If you guys are interested in seeing some pics of an authentic Southern redneck wedding let me know. I just hope they've gotten all of the snakes out of the chappel.

So how did it go?
02/11/2007 12:54:54 PM · #88
It was a blast, my friend who was asked to do the wedding was a nervous wreck, sweating like a pig, tugging on a flask of Jim Beam. Since I figured I wasn't going tp make a dime, I had no pressure. Check out my portfolio on DPC and get a look at the ringboy. I thought the Bride's mother and father were going to duke it out before the wedding. The bride out weighed the groom by 100 pounds. I hauled ass after the ceremony, didn't go to the reception, was hit on by too many of those cows, guess they figured I was a good catch since I could afford a camera.

Sounds like the perfect first job from the pressure and expectations standpoint. I'll check out the portfolio. Congratulations!

Though I didn't make the team, I like to wander in here and follow y'all. If I may make a recommendation. . . :)

I have the Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR II and I've found it to be a really versatile lens. While it's a bit pricey and hard to find, I highly recommend it! It rarely comes off the body these days.

Hi fellow D80 owners! I may not have joined the team (didn't get back to you soon enough) but will keep an eye on this forum and make to odd pointless and/or useless contributions here and there :o)

I must say I'm enjoying getting to grips with photography and finding the D80 to be a wonderful camera to use. So far so good...

Scores Update
---------------------

Not doing very well this week in the Fruits and Vegetables challenge. I knew my pic was on the boring side when I entered it and I'm getting what I deserve. This is going to be a high scoring challenge. The overall quality of the submissions is high. It looks like you're faring pretty well Yianis. Good luck!

Working on the Street Photography challenge, thanks for all the comments guys, as for the lighting question for The Escape, BW Portrait, no flashes etc, this is a statue on the square in the town I live in, set up on a tripod and used the lighting from the bottom of the statue. Speaking of lighting, anybody have a home studio set up, would like to get into that but have no real experience. Just bought a muslin backdrop, don't want to invest a fortune until I know if it's something I will use. Heard Alien Bees was a good place to start. Just need a simple set up for family portraits. My Bad entry tanked, guess cause it really was bad.

I'm interested too in getting some lighting equipment without having to spend a fortune on professional studio equipment. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful.

I use 4 Nikon SB-800 fliashlights to do most of my work, they come with diffusers and color gel filters PLUS the one attached to your D80 will remote control all the others, you can set them into groups A,B,C and then adjust the EV on each group. I think you can control p to 20speedlights this way, five or six per group.

Welcome !! And yes, the D-80 is an exceptional camera for it's price
and then some ! If you get the VR 18-200 Zoom, it will be the perfect setup.
