Kyle, did you use image overlay in edit menu? I tried that this am but not sure if I actually did it right, will an overlay be reflected in the playback menu? Also, how do you import an image into a post?

I use aperture mode for the majority of my shooting. DOF control and ease of adjustment for lighting situations are my reasons. Auto WB unless the results are not what I'm looking for in my preview after taking a shot. I shoot JPEG fine as I don't have a good RAW converter (don't want to pay for Nikons and I'm using PS6 so right now so I'm JPG only...looking into Rawshooter and will be upgrading to the new version of PS in March when it is slated to be released). My grid is on all the time as it is very helpful with rule of 3rds and making sure my horizons are level. I use the built-in flash as I don't have an external at this time (drooling over SB800 though) and I generally use it unless the result of doing so is worse than shooting without it.

Boxers.

Right now I'm using a crappy Slik tripod I bought for my camcorder a couple of years ago.

I'm currently competing in Centered Composition II and it looks like I'll have a new 3rd highest score. The photo is good for what it is and as I started shooting 45 minutes before the deadline for submission I'm pretty happy with it. Not a bad way to start out the year :)

Yes, I did the editing with the playback menu, the resulting combine image is also a RAW so you can open it with Photoshop CS2.

Definitely not ribbon territory but a respectable score nonetheless. I'll take it. It'll raise the average a bit.

Hello team! Here are my few initial remarks, just to say that the D80 is my second digital SLR (my first one was the Olympus E-500), but my second Nikon digital camera (first one was the Coolpix 8800).
I mostly shoot in RAW+JPEG in P mode with the 18-135mm kit lens.
I own both a laptop PC (IBM Thninkpad T42) and a 20" Intel based iMac.
I do my post-processing in Photoshop CS2, with frequent use of CameraRaw, PTLens, and NeatImage plugins.

Happy shooting to everybody!

Our team is completed, and on the waiting list.
Here's the link to WPL4. Have fun !

Well, I submitted my first ever black and white portrait to the challenge. Actually, it's my first ever black and white photo, or conversion to black and white at least. Don't know how it will do, but hopefully not too badly!

Good luck, Joel!

I'm not entering anything in the open challenges tonight. Hoping for some good challenges to appear on the rollover. Currently waiting for centered composition II to end tonight to see how I end up.

I was thinking that it would be nice in the spirit of teamwork to comment on each others pictures after the challenges finish. I commented on everyones pictures submitted this year - this sounds like a lot of work, but it is just the 01.10.07 (-: I will try to continue this as long as possible.

In my comments I try to emphasize on what I did NOT like about the pictures and not the other way around. After all what are teammates for (-:

yianisn,

I think this is a great idea. Brutal honesty in critiques is hard to come by in a community such as this. People are afraid of rubbing people the wrong way.

I appreciated your comment on my Centered Composition II entry. I was aware of the issue before submitting but couldn't correct it well enough in time to meet the submission date. (See the last of my posted goals on my profile page) :P

I like the idea! Most people are somehow afraid to make negative comments, not to hurt anyone. An open invitation to submit critiques to team members is definetly a good initiative!

I'd be interesting in tagging along in discussions of the D80. Guess the team for WPL is full, but I wouldn't be making much of a contribution anyway. My first entry to a DPChallenge finished something like 307 out of 315, in the fences challenge (got it sized incorrectly among other things). And my B&W portrait probably wont do a lot better. I'm here to learn.
I've only had the D80 with the kit 18mm-135mm lense for about three weeks, so finally feel that I can get serious about photography as a hobby. Previously I was using a point and shoot canon with 2.1mp, so quite an upgrade. I do have a tripod, but it's an old one that my parents had for the camcorder, would like to get a monopod that can double as a walking stick for easier hiking/crowded area shoots.
For editing I've been using Adobe Elements, especially since I got the RAW plug in for it working, on a PC.

I couldn't agree more! I'm sure a lot of people think I'm an ass from my comments, but I try to keep the uplifting stuff short and sweet and try to help improve the shots.

Is it just me or are an incredibly number of the BW portraits for the challenge in Sepia or spot colored? I can't help but incredibly downgrade those shots for not staying on an even keel with everyone else's work. If you go that outside of a defined challenge, you shouldn't be entering the challenge. Not that I think my shot will do particularly well, but I feel good knowing that I fairly entered the challenge.

What is everyone's favorite lens to shoot with? I'm just getting started in photography and playing with the strengths and weaknesses of the lenses, but I honestly don't know enough about photography to know anything about lenses other than that they cost WAY too much money!

Right now my favorite lens is the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Great lens for the price, under $400.00. I also like the Nikon 85 f1.8, but the Tamron has been staying on the camera for most of the time. I also have two manual focus AI-S lenses, a Tokina 28 f1.8 and a Nikon 50 f1.2. These are fun to work with, you have to put the D80 in M mode, and adjust aperture and shutter in order to make a decent shot. RGB histogram really helps in this. I got my highest score in the Bokeh challenge using the Nikon 50. Helps to use a tripod and a stationary subject when using these manual lenses. Anybody got the new Nikon 70-300VR lens yet?
