Ein Computerkartoffel!

There's going to be a lot of novels going the rounds - should we start out with a little anthology of short stories?

And by the way, the cat just typed mjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj

I'm not sure if it means anything, in cat.

I'll look into that. The English-speaking subcontractor of Telekom has until the end of this week to tell me whether or not they're going to install DSL, then I'm cancelling that contract. Does the mobile alternative use a satellite or just the mobile?

It would just require you to have a mobile phone with a usb connection. You'd ideally need a 3G service for speed, and some kind of unlimited or high-volume data transfer contract, because the per MB charging can be pretty expensive for casual browsing.

Enter the one that will score high and put the other one in your portfolio. You can even let it be one of the selected shots shown from your portfolio in your profile.

I've chosen one shot from each of several collections for my profile, so people can see the variety of things I've done and then explore those collections more if they're interested.

I would say, submit the one you want feedback on. Challenge pictures get more feedback. That's just the way of things.

My DPC 2007 goals:

Learn masking technique
Become more familiar with layers
Figure out dodge and burn
Keep up with my Picture a Week blog
Maintain my Photo a Day blog
Personally like my challenge entries (regardless of the final vote!)

My DPC goals for 2007 is:

-Get a 6 on any particular challenge.

-Take less photos that "I" like so that I can achieve the above goal.

-Stay on Team Suck forever. I love this place.

The sad thing is that my current Pattern score is my highest score ever(5.8762) and I don't even like the picture. It was my attempt at going more mainstream to try and get a 6. I agree with melethia that it gets somewhat depressing when you get really bad scores. So I guess another goal would be to not let it bother me.

DPC 2007 Goals:

1 Be so intuitively connected to the process of photography as to have something resembling professional pride in the results.

2 Be mistaken for anybody.

3 On achieving 2, be unmistakably recognised as me, always.

4 Develop secret agent strategies to fool people who thought they could always recognise me.

I got a poem on my kite (wind) photo from posthumous and it was one of my best experiences here :-) A worthy goal, indeed.

I had one (my last free study) where Goodman noted that it looked like something from xion and I took that as the ultimate compliment. So yes, I'd say that's a worthy goal indeed.

I guess I should add that I secretly harbor the desire to get an e301 comment at some point in my DPC career.

My goals are to enter challenges, and enjoy it.

My statistical niceities are listed in my profile. Such as breaking a 5.0 average.

DPC goals for 2007

1) To score consistently in the 5s;
2) To break 6, which I very nearly did with Occupation;
3) To be a lifetime member of the Suck League, even if I ever do wind up with a ribbon (ok everyone you can stop laughing now ;0)
4) To learn my way around Photoshop CS 8.0, and stop chickening out by using just Elements;
5) To finally figure out how to get logos and stuff to put on my page; and finally...
6) TAKE BETTER PICTURES!!!!!

actually i'm going to listen to both of you. in retrospect, i'm not sure anymore which one will score higher and my whole reason for entering these types of shots was to subject them to commenting.

the higher scores will come as i improve.

BTW, thanks all everyone who commented on my Occupation. Funny thing about that pic - yes I did crop it, but not at the top - I only cropped out the bottom, as I was holding the camera at arm's-length and thus had some blurry sleeve in the way.

As for scores...AA battery is getting tons of comments but only 4.7, while 12 days is precariously close to 5 at 4.91.

Did submit for Fences but am afraid that as I am such a poo-head about learning Photoshop, that I still haven't yet figured out how to save pix so they're the right file size AND max quality. Don patiently did send me a private tutorial on how to do this awhile ago, and I did dig it up, so now I'll try to put it to good use.

2007 goals:

1. to have my top 3 all above 6.0.
2. to get a 7 in a challenge.
3. to improve my street photography and get a picture of posthumous wearing a kilt on his way to the liqour store.
4. to improve my post processing skills so that you can make out the pattern on the kilt.
5. get a picture within the top 20.
6. go to germany and take a picture of Deb eating chinese food.
7. attend a team suck GTG at disneyland.

posthumous would you be willing to share this again? I've had trouble numerous times with this issue!

snaffles, could you post what I sent you? I don't have it anymore and I'm probably stupider now than I was then.

If you're ever in the NY/NJ area, bring a kilt and you're on!

Should be required reading for beginners:tutorial.

Also don't upsize when cropping - this increases the pixelation of the image.

OK Don and all else,

Here's what posthumous pm'd me back in September when I was struggling with file size - only diff now is that I do have PS, whereas before I didn't (well, PS Elements doesn't have lossy...whatever that is...;-)

DPChallenge user posthumous has sent you the following private message:

sorry, I only know photoshop, but I have some suggestions that I think are
relevant:

1. Save your photo in a non-lossy format. If elements has its own format, use
that. Otherwise, you can use TIFF. Do not save it as a jpeg again until you are
making your final copy for the challenge.

2. When it looks good (before sharpening), save it BEFORE you shrink it.

3. Re-size it as big as allowed.

4. Sharpen it. This should be the LAST thing you do before you save the final
copy to jpeg and you should only do it ONCE. If you decide you want to make
additional changes, go back to the BIG, unsharpened version you saved in step
2!!

5. Save to jpeg. If the file size is too big, decrease the quality of the jpeg
until it's 150k or slightly below, do NOT make the picture smaller.

6. You now have 3 files:

1) the original jpeg (I don't use RAW files. I think that's an additional step).
keep this in case you get a validation request or if you want to start from
scratch.

2) the elements/tiff file. Use this to make additional changes. It could also be
used during validation to show what steps you took.

3) the final jpeg. Upload this file to DPC.

Am I making sense? Let me know if you have any questions.

-Don

Actually Photoshop Elements does have the ability to save files in a lossless format as a photoshop or .tiff image.

I know just the place, too. Though I am always on the lookout for good Chinese food places - it's one of my favorite food types. For family occasions - birthdays and such - we'd go out for Chinese and do the whole "one from column A, two from column B" thing. I don't think many operate that way anymore, but it was fun.

An easy way to do this step is to use "Save for the web" under the File drop down. That will take you to a screen where there is a little > arrow above the word 'Optimized'. Click on that arrow to get the optimized menu. Select "Optimize to file size" and enter the file size for the competition (150 or 200). Click OK then Save. Give the file a name and you will have a jpg file of the appropriate size.

P.S. For those of you wanting to learn more about Photoshop, Radiant Vista has a weekly PS Workshop movie (15 to 20 minutes) to download. It is very instructional and free.

I have a few questions about Photoshop:

What is the difference between Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop Elements?

Does Elements have curves?

Is Elements better than Photoshop 6 or 7?

I still have PSP9 and I like it, but it's hard to share information with other people because so few people have it. I've been thinking about getting elements but I'm not really sure which way to go.

And when you do save for web, always make sure you've saved a normal sized jpeg first because when you save for web, it doesn't save your editing steps with the file. This can be helpful if someone wants to know what you did, and if you're like me, you haven't a clue unless you can check the history associated with the file.
