For Christmas my kids got me a 50 mm Canon lense. So I'm pulling the lens out of the box to give it a try on my camera when it "pops" out of my hand and falls to the floor (2 feet at most as I was sitting). Needless to say there was a rattle and when I removed the back cover some of the glass optics fell out... not good.

I've sent it in for repair but it really bummed me that I didn't even get to use the lense.

Dropping a 1.8 would have been bad enough. A 1.4 is absolutely horrible. Gawrsh. Sorry.

That sucks.

If it makes you feel better, we got a new dog the day before Xmas and he was lost by one of our guests taking him on a walk Xmas morning. You can imagine what sort of Xmas that made for.

Fortunately we found him the next day.

Now go be irresponsible and just buy another 50mm heh. No waiting on repairs!

well the repair is supposed to take 7 business days so I'll wait to see how it comes out before I go out and buy another lense...

The upside is that I finally got my wife to notice that I have a wish list on my profile page in case she is trying to figure out what to get me the next time she is shopping for a gift.

Any chance it was bought with a credit card that protects against accidental damage? I know Amex would cover this repair. Something worth looking into.

just imagine how sick he'd have felt if it had been the 50mm 1.2?! yikes...

hope the lens comes back quickly...

Well it was the first time I've ever dropped a lens... My wife just sorta stared at me when I did it :-(

I think we all dread the day it happens. I haven't done it yet but I'm sure my time is coming. I can only hope that when it does happen, it's my 50mm 1.8 that gets dropped as it's the only cheap lens in bag.

As a testament to the durability of the XT. I sold mine to a friend at work. He slipped and fell down the stairs on his deck with camera in hand. As his elbow hit the stairs it launched the camera and lens forward down the rest of the stairs. By his account it tumbled end for end the rest of the way down onto the concrete below. The camera and lens suffered minor damage and still worked fine. I don't know, maybe he just got lucky or maybe the so-called cheaply built XT with it's plastic body is more durable than people give it credit for.

Woot!

I got my lens back today and after a few test shots it seems to be working fine! DOF on this is pretty good when set at 1.4. Now to be careful with the lens from here on out.

Glad to hear you got it back so fast, enjoy! :)

Glad to hear you got the lens back so fast and working. I am dreading changing my lenses now cause I just got a Olympus 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko Digital for Christmas from my wife and I know I would totally feel like crap if I dropped it or damaged it some how. And with my past history, this is very likely. ;)

Yeah... I UPS'd the package out the day after Christmas and Canon service turned it around fairly quickly. No charge!

When I got it in today I had the same difficulty trying to pull it out of the box that I was afraid of "popping" it out of the box like I did on Christmas... jeesh.

But you can get some nice DOF.

I am getting mine tomorrow. I guess I had better be careful. Mine is the 1.8 so I won't be handling quite as expensive of a lens.

Edit: Typo

Mine came right out of the box with no problem! I made sure to sit on the couch just in case.

After playing around with the lens for a few minutes I have found that it will not focus when I am very close to the subject. Is this typical for this lens? Are the 1.4 and 1.2 and different in this aspect?

From what I can remember, minimum focussing distance for the 1.8 is around half a meter.

Too bad it wasn't an f/1.8. Could have used it for a hockey puck and bought another to replace it.
