Now that I have both cameras popularly owned by DPCers, I thought it may be useful to compare the two in a limited manner.

1. Nikon ergonomics are better. No surprise here, everyone else says the same.
2. Nikon jpeg 'fine' and 'ultra' jpegs are superior to Canon's. The Canon jpeg tends to 'muddy' details, especially in distant foliage.
3. Canon has superior resolution (raw format), casual to the most obvious observer.
4. Straight 'out of camera' image is better from Canon in most respects.
5. Canon has more features, like dof preview and mirror lockup.
6. Nikon's builtin Noise Reduction for long exposures works extremely well, Canon's is almost useless.
7. Canon low light performance is superior to Nikon, having better dynamic range.
8. Overall: Canon XT is a better buy.

I honestly see no use for DOF preview on any digital when you can just shoot the shot and zoom in right there to see the DOF. The viewfinder is too small to really judge to DOF to the degree necessary where you might actually use it. This function seems to have been carried over from film just to appease people who are used to having it.

Tell us about the regular noise performance (as in, not Long Exposure) of the XT versus the D50. Does the XT handle noise at 1600 well?

Noise at ISO 1600 is comparable in both cameras, though different in texture, probably a result of the different sensor technologies. The Canon includes ISO 100 at the low end vs. ISO 200 for the Nikon. But noise in the Nikon at ISO 200 is not significantly different to the Canon at ISO 100. I agree that the dof preview is marginal, at best. The viewfinder on the Nikon is brighter and has a larger image scale.

I hope this doesn't turn into a us vs them debate, but the reviews I've read have always found the Nikon a bit better. But, I have heard that straight out of camera, Canon is usualy better. The 'explanation' I've read is that Nikon folks tend to prefer more post processing. Whether that's true or not, I dunno.

What I do on my D80, when I'm just shooting 'family' type of pics, is shoot in RAW (I'm hooked), the run an action I made after opening the RAW to set auto curves, resize, a couple USM passes, and save and close. Seems to work well for quick 'n dirty :)
