I have been using firewire CF card readers for the past 3 years and I love the speed. Now that I'm using SD cards, I need to buy 3 firewire SD card readers. Problem is I cannot find any SD card readers with firewire protocol.

If any of you knows of a make or retailer, please give me a leg up on this. Thank you.

Aren't any of the multi-card things available with a firewire interface?

Actually I can't even find one. There are plenty of USB 2.0 readers but no firewire, which is why I'm asking for help.

Maybe you could contact the company that made the ones you have now & see if they sell a conversion kit. Or, they may even make a sd reader. I've seen some ads that say the card reader comes with an insert for reading sd cards. I nerver noticed if the were usb or firewire though.

In a quick search I found two multi-readers that claim to support SD cards, but both have been discontinued. The reviews I came across suggested to try a SD to CF converter that allows using the SD in a CF reader -- but, they also mention they hadn't tried it themselves.

If it's any consolation, the two multi-readers I found didn't look like they had a slot specifically for SD cards, so they possibly worked with an CF converter as well. I don't know for sure though.

Merry Christmas All.

David, yes the ones you saw were probably made by Addonics and are sold under other labels too. Someone bought one from them before they discontinued the product. he says it works very well and it does have an SD slot. I think that is one very neat product because they have no competition.

I don't think you'll see much difference in speed between Firewire and hi-speed USB 2.0 for your flash cards. Both protocols are faster than the read/write times of the cards themselves.

Actually that would be incorrect. Although their technical specs say 400mb/s vs 480mb/s, in real use, the firewire reader trounces the USB 2.0. I know this for a fact because I have been using firewire CF readers from Lexar and Delkin for 3 years now and all the USB 2.0 readers stayed on the shelf. That is precisely why I want to find firewire readers for my SD cards.

I've been looking for a FW card reader myself and couldn't find one in the stores, which surprised me too.

Why do you use SD cards? -I keep one of each, flash and SD in camera, but never use the SD for anything but backup.

I'm now shooting with a D80 and that uses SD cards. otherwise, I have plenty of firewire CF readers (lexars, delkin) for my other cameras that use CF cards.

Solved this problem.

Got a SD to CF adapter and use my Firewire CF card reader to transfer files. Pretty fast.

I wasn't saying which protocol was the fastest. I was saying both USB and Fireware are faster than the read/write times of the CF cards themselves. Therefore, it doesn't matter which you use, USB or Firewire, you'll still download your CF card in just about the same amount of time.

Also, be careful to get a CF card reader that says hi speed on it.

There are USB 2.0 "compatible" readers which will take about 20 minutes to offload a 1G card. And there are USB 2.0 "hi speed" readers that will take about 4 minutes to do the same thing.
