I currently have an EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM on my Canon 30D. It is kind of OK but I'm not extremely happy with it, especially due to the sealing (it gets a lot of dust inside). I've been looking at the reviews for 24-70 f/2.8 and looks like everybody has been very happy with it.

It is kind of expensive though. I'm not making any money from photography but got the bug of the pro series "L" lenses. So I'm wondering if it would worth (assuming that I wouldn't mind spending the money) to replace the 17-85 with a 24-70?

Thanks

I think you'd be happy with that choice. You'll prolly also get a lot of responses suggesting the Tamron 28-75, and that is also a very good choice, at a lower cost and somewhat smaller size. Personally I bought the 24-70 and never looked back. I knew I was going FF, and the extra 4mm was important, as was the build quality. I'm not regretting the choice.

It is my favorite and most used lens. I don't think you can go wrong with it.

You'll have a difficult time finding, if it's even possible, to find a better lens in that focal range, at any price.

I think it's the best general purpose lens money can buy.

The 17-55 2.8 IS is a better fit on your 30D and an amazing lens. It would be L glass except canon has yet to put the L name on any EF-S lens. YOu will probably find the 24 end not wide enough for a lot of interior work. And the IS on the 17-55 is amazing - I can handhold 1/5 second at 55mm! I didn't try to see how slow I could go at 17mm.

The 24-70 is a good lens, but the tamron 28-75 2.8 SP is 1/3 to 1/4 the price and 99% as good.

I agree about the 17-55, though I love my 24-70, I want something wider yet fast. Depends what you're shooting.

Thanks for the comment about the 17-55. Actually, I thought about that one as well, but I have a 70-200 telephoto lens, so I'd like this lens to cover up to at least 70 mm. I think I'm going to get another wide angle lens to cover for anything less than 24 mm (something like EF-S 10-22 or EF 16-35L or Sigma 12-24). Haven't really thought about the options yet.

Well, you people convinced me that it's worth going with the 24-70. Now I need to convince my wife ;-). Thanks for the comments!
