I am all for that message that appears when you vote a 1, 2 or 3 but however, it annoys me that it pops up even if you DO leave a comment wich I always do when voting that low.

Isn´t there some easy way that if you do leave a comment and then click a 1, 2 or 3 the message does not appear?

Why is there not the same suggestion for votes of 8,9, or 10?

Because people are generally happy to see those votes.

I don't think a vote of 1, 2, or 3 should even be counted unless there is a comment that consists of at least a certain number of characters to keep people from voting and just putting in a space or a single character in order to get it to vote.

The past week has probably been a good example why people don't often comment on their lower scores - when they do they get called out in the forums for it.

I don't think that every low vote requires a comment--if a picture's completely (and apparently unintentionally) out of focus, I doubt they need 200 voters to say "your pics OOF"
Seems pretty silly to me.
Maybe if someone is voting 1-3 on several pictures...to ward off the trolls?

Well, if you don't have a good reason to low vote someone then you should get called out. There's no reason for an image that ends up scoring above a 4 to even receive a 1 as a vote. If it meets the challenge it deserves at least a 2. If it's in focus and meets the challenge it deserves a 3. Maybe just have that rule applied for votes of 1 and 2. And I think the same should go for 9's and 10's to keep people from getting on here who is buddies with someone and voting the image up.

Now this is one that I can agree on. A comment that simply states "2" is just annoying and doesn't help the photographer improve. Just get rid of the "low" comment box all together because trolls can't ellaborate anyway:)

and if it does ?

Maybe we should just start the scale at 5 ?

What good would that do? Then you're just shifting the voting scale and 5 would become a "low vote". I think everybody can agree that most images submitted on this site do not deserve a vote of 1 or 2, yet sometimes we even have ribbon winners end up with a few 1's and 2's as votes.

Exactly, then why propose it ? That's effectively what you'd be doing. If everyone can agree that 1 or 2 shouldn't ever be used, why have them ?

In my opinion the people who hate constructive criticism the most are the people who submit craptastic photos because you "can't see their vision" or whatever.

I don't think people should need to explain or comment on a 1 anymore than they should a 10 or a 5.

What meets the challenge? There is no definitive guide to that. What is a crappy photo? Heck, what is in focus?

All these things are subjective and thus votes are as well. Nothing wrong with some diversity of opinions.

I vote we get rid of the box altogether.

edit, spelling of craptastic

Ya know, I'm kinda sick of commenting and voting threads...

But, I'd like to see more commenting o low votes. I would second the notion that comments be REQUIRED on votes lower than 4.

Let me change my opinion just a bit... REQUIRE comments if a voter gives more than a fixed percentage of 1-3 votes to have them counted.

Well, one reason I'm proposing this is to discourage the trolls and also to help the new people along. If an image deserves a vote that low then the person that took the picture obviously needs some help so why not add some helpful comments if you think they need so much help?

I think we should just do away with anonymous voting. That'd fix it right up.

I don't agree, every image deserves exactly whatever votes it gets.

If I think an image deserves a 1 or a 2, that's a good enough reason. I don't have to justify my opinion.

Because, as mentioned the person 'helped' typically starts a thread about how their artistic vision wasn't recognised and the person who voted them below a 4 was a troll and had the outrageous gall to comment and leave their name/ score ?

I agree. If people had to leave a message about why they voted so low, we could just cut to directly PMing them to tell them why they're wrong, rather than having to post vague callout threads about the stupid voters in general.

That's true. Perhaps the pop-up could just do that directly ? Save the photographer the trouble.

Well, if you know who voted you so low then you can PM them instead of ranting about some annonymous(sp?) vote.

I think Gordon for got the <sarcasm> tag :-P
Anonymous voting is what makes DPC what it is. Anonymous voting is what keeps it from being a popularity contest. It would be suicidal to do away with it.

Right. So that's the perfect way to get honest feedback.
So again - why not just do away with the 3 and under scores ?

Read up on 'chilling effects' if you aren't sure.

Yeah, I didn't think about that. Disregard my "AMEN!" lol
