Maybe this should go in the rant forum, but I just got a 1 on my shadows entry. I could understand it if it was unfocused, noisy, didn't meet the challenge or whatever. But that's not the case.
Why would someone mark it so low? Just to be mean? They didn't even give me a reason!

Unfortunately, this happens, even when there is no reason. On another thread, someone said, they vote on some photos, then give the rest 1s.

Have a look at challenge winners, for example the lighting winners. Even they receive 1's or 2's. I cannot understand it either, but that is how it is. Try to forget, don't let it bother you is my advise.

I have a question...how can you tell that someone just gave you a one, or any other number??
I thought you could only see a voting breakdown after challenge is judged. Anne

Actually, I think the comment on the other forum was a "what if I vote on some and give the rest 1", not that they really do it.

Getting a 1 here is an initiation test. If you get one and don't whine about it you pass and are accepted into the ultra-secret photographers club.

Anne, if you have 30 votes with an average score of 3.8667 and then, suddenly, the number of votes goes to 31 and your average score drops to 3.7742, you can be pretty sure he just got hit with a 1.

I know I shouldn't whine, but it was like a slap in the face. I can live with it.
To re-start on a more positive note. Good Morning. I'm off to work. Hope you all have a productive day.

Thanks...another Math-challenged person here

Just look at the top 10 in any challenge - almost all of them get a bitchy little 1 by some zero who's too jealous and weak to show themselves.

Don't worry about it - it's only a game, and they're the losers! ; )

Better get used to it. It happens in almost every challenge that someone, for whatever reason will shovel out these odoriferous low scores.

I was quite surprised that I got a 1 and a 2 on my Lighting shot that scored almost 6.5. I must have offended someone or got a wallop from one of the resident trolls.

From my point of view, I don't want comments from One-ers or Two-ers. I'd rather just dismiss them as being wankers right from the get-go. Makes me feel better that way.

Oops! Did I just say the forbidden "W" word? Probably going to get this thread locked.

Anyway, don't let these goons get to you and have a good one.

Don't worry about it. I know it's discouraging to have someone dump on your hard work. But in the grand scheme of things, it really only affects your score by a couple hundredths of a point. If some malicious bastard thinks he's really skewing the scores in his favor, the jokes on him. A great picture is a great picture. Changing the score by a couple hundredths of a point won't affect much. Take a look at all the past ribbon winners. Nine times out of ten, a couple hundredths of a point wouldn't have change the final outcome. If it did and the poor bastard won, oh well, it can't be that satisfying for them.

There should be an ability to view peoples voting. My guess there are those with multible accounts, mark theirs high and everyone else very low. I mean some accountability should exist, if someone marks everything with 1s and 3s then it should be understood he/she is a smuck. Personally out of 10 an average photo should be a 5, and only a disasterous photo should rank a 1. Out of focus, poorly light, bad composition, etc, etc. Unfortuantely some very fine entries - obviously average or much better receive a one or a two. its just wrong.

....or better yet.Only let people that entered the challenge vote and continue to allow comments from everybody. This should kill some birds but not all with a stone.

Is there a potential danger there though Faidoi that some people will just shove in a totally crap photo, nothing to do with the challenge, just so they can vote?

I have to admit though that historically I have noticed that nasty comments seem to come from people who haven't even got a single photo ever been on the site. I sometimes wonder if those people do enter the challenges by another name.

Even this got 2-1's and 2-2s.! That to me is very mean spirited and I piety the person that has to resort to such foolishness.
11/06/2003 07:39:28 PM · #17
Totally agree with you jmritz.

I would love to hear ANYONE who gave that a 1 justify that, as to me a 1 means "totally crap". Scores like that on a photo like that to me reek of people trying to get ahead by putting competitors down.

I agree,Natator, it is, well I Admit I get MAD when I see it but we must live with it. We can not allow such (crap) to influence our regular voting patterns. Sorry about the language

This is completely unfounded and mean-spirited rumor-mongering. If you KNOW of someone with multiple accounts, then please send the admins a note via the menu Help>Contact link citing the details.

If you have no such knowledge, please refrain from posting non-specific accusations which ultimately impugn the integrity of every member.

We have an accountability system -- and its effectiveness is obviously reliant upon your being unable to detect its activites.

That's what a 1 means to you, but might not to me or someone else. I don't have a right to tell you how you should determine the criteria for a vote of 1, and vice versa.

Until such time as we adopt a uniform code of voting criteria (never?) it is completely pointless to complain about people voting something a 1. WHATEVER their reason, it has been deemed valid.

That virtually every photo gets a few ones is established fact and of little consequence to me ... I'm more concerned with the 50 or so ones I got recently ...

PATTERNS of low voting intended to manipulate scores are already accounted-for and dealt with by the site admins.

Paul

OK I understand what you are saying. And I accept it. There is no way to determine who or why. I can still get upset though can't I?
11/06/2003 08:12:18 PM · #22
I'd rather you could disagree (and maybe pity the poor voter) without getting upset -- it's deleterious to your long-term health.
11/06/2003 08:12:54 PM · #23
Sorry guys. It's a pity that people vote 1's, but that's a part of a democracy, I guess. I have a song I sing when I see the ones. "He's a real nowhere man, sitting in his nowhere land......" Somehow it helps a lot. Sometimes I make up my own words.
And then, there was my last challenge. Truly a humbling experience.
11/06/2003 08:13:02 PM · #24
Actually the picture never got a "1"

Unless it was dismissed by an admin or something.
11/06/2003 08:14:57 PM · #25
You're right. My math was off. It got a 2. Sorry again. my bad
