Hi all,

Since I'll have a week of vacation over Christmas, I might have some time to add features to PPChallenge.com. I just wanted to get a touch of feedback as to what you might find useful.

- It has been suggested that it could use a forum. This might be useful, but it's a big project undertaking. And since DPC has a forum, would it really be of value?

- Another thing I want to do is add a table to the statistics page so that people can more easily see information about their submissions. Currently it only shows a few statistics and the 4 highest rated and 4 most recent submissions.

- Maybe onsite messaging would be fun. (Not quite live chat, not quite DPC PM's, but somewhere in between)

What do you guys think after using the site for a bit? What would be useful? What do you think about the frequency/duration/etc of the challenges?

Cheers,
-Jeff

I like the idea of a place to discuss the results of the challenge and the techniques used by the entries. A forum would work but even just a chat room would suffice.

Personally, I would like to have some interactive critiques/mentoring with individuals who could be balanced as to loving toughness in order to grow while maintaining my self esteem. (I have already learned much this way on DPC.)
If a person tells me their boundaries as to length of time available, types of advice their comfortable providing, and any expectations, I always honor & respect that person for their firm, but kind honesty.
It might be helpful to create "sliders" that are available upon request to give a more accurate idea of the grader's "take" on a photo. A sliding scale between poor(1) to great(5) regarding color, creativity, clarity, common sense, etc.
I would also like to have a little check to say, "This comment was helpful!" :)

Possibly add the feature of being able to add a comment on our own images after a challenge is over.

Another thought was an email notification when a new challenge is announced.

Maybe some published standards as to how to grade. I do like it when commenters tell you numerically what they like about each pic in DPC. i.e 2 for originality, 3 for fits etc.

maybe if we could have a teeny tiny place where we could discuss the results it would be great..when the results are out I'm usually itching to discuss and disect them but I never know if it's a good idea to start something here..
and a stats page will be good..

Forums would not be that much of a chore if you don't insist on 'rolling your own'. There are a number of forum packages available (most are free) that can be incorporated into the site. vBulletin is by far the standard, and most are knock-offs of previous versions of it -- but it has a cost so probably isn't an option. Wikipedia's 'Comparison of Internet Forum Software' is a good place to start if you decide to go that route. Just pick one that has the features you want and uses a database your comfortable with.

Alternatively, there are a number of sites that host forums so you wouldn't even have to set up the software. Many of them can be integrated into your website seamlessly (as opposed to going to another site for the forums).

2 Challanges to pick from. I don't think there would be much of a problem filling 2 up

Ok, so unfortunately I didn't get to a forum or even "a place to discuss results". Still on the TODO list. I was much too busy visiting family, friends, and stuffing myself with Holiday goodies. =)

However, I did get a few technical and behind-the-scenes items running a lot better, which may not directly impact you, the user, but it will allow the site to operate more smoothly.

- I added a mechanism to allow me (and possible future council members) to more easily navigate the photo submissions and queue up challenges. I should be able to easily maintain 2 per week, with week-long submission and voting phases.

- I fixed image caching (it wasn't working before because images are delivered via a php script, for those technically interested. Images are cached now, so the whole site should appear faster.)

- I added a DQ mechanism (however, I still need to add a "suspect rules violation" button to the image vote/view page.)

I'm also going to be adding a favorites mechanism soon.

Cheers and Happy New Year,
-Jeff
