Landscapes are always going to win because they rarely get dinged for DNMC. They are like teflon nothing sticks to them. :P

All in all I think the top 10 has pretty much the right group of pictures in it, EXCEPT I expected to see this one at or near the top instead of in 20th place:

I'm actually a little surprised mine did as well as it did, incidentally. I hoped it would make the top 10, but I wasn't holding my breath. A low-scoring challenge for sure; I guess death does that to people?

Frankly, I'm surprised it finished as high as it did. The problem with it is it's too much about death. Now if it was a pretty picture that was loosely connected to something having to do with death then it would have finished much higher.

I'm glad that the toppers were mostly my choice..
For my own pic, I was disappointed to not get the negative comments to match the scores..
12/13/2006 01:45:42 AM · #10
mine was a last minute entry, so i am not complaining about my score and my ranking :)

One of the few times I'll ask "what do you think this one would have done"

While I really liked the image I put in commemorating The Day of the Dead celebrated by our large latin population, it scored badly:

My alternate was this one which I titled "Maintenance Crew at Woodlawn"

What do you think. Would the Crew have done better?

hmmm. perhaps

In the top ten finishers I didn't vote on 6 of them. The four I gave votes to were a 7 and three 5's. The ones I gave ten to are in 21st, 36th, 64th, 130th, and 145th places. I didn't enter either this or life.

- JuliaDavis' entry

Sixth place is very impressive for a first challenge entry! Certainly nothing to be disappointed about :)

There were a few comments on this picture querying how it was done without using selective desaturation - and I've gotta admin I'm curious too. How did you do it?
Cheers
Buzzy

This one SHOULD have been at least top ten. It's a shame that it's not.

That was one of my top picks as well.

Personally, I think there are a lot of mis-placed photos in the challenge - both rated too high as well as too low. But hey, what the hell do I know.

The results were terrible, as usual. Julia, yours was the best photo in this competition by a mile, or at least two lengths.

As to the results, you're only disappointed because you're a newbie. If you'd been here a while, you'd know what an incredible achievement it was for you to get 6th place with a photo with such a soft focus and no pop. I was amazed when I saw how highly you had placed.

well, at least I made it to top 100. With every1 picking on my borders I went a bit more..slim this time. Still didnt help. Finished 97. Weird, a sunset was in there, that should work for most ppl round here... Is this a landscape site? landscape are always winners here..thats sick. I would love to see some smart, conceptual shots as winners, but...

it seemed like there was a love / hate thing going on with my pic. Thought it would do better though...

This photo was actually my top pick also.

I'm confused as to what you mean that it was too much about death. The topic was death, so it got scored lower because it covered the topic too much? I thought it explored the topic very well and was a pleasing photo technically as well. i expected this to be the top choice.
