Whant to know - how does the Canon 400D compare to the 350D? my 350D was stolen yesterday and insurance wants to replace it with a 400D

Sounds like a good deal to me.. its newer and the technology is newer so it must be improved and it has a 10MP sensor. I would say you got a cracking deal, smile, accept, and enjoy your new toy. sorry your old one was stolen, I hope the guy/girl that stole it drops it on the floor and it smashes into a 1000 pieces so its no benefit to them..

YIPEEEEE! go get your new 400D and forget the bad experience.

Well, I don't own the 400D but this would be the cam I would buy if I had money. I read several reviews and I think it rocks! :)
dpreview has some outstanding infos about digicams: DPReview

They have a cool compare feature where you can compare for exampel 350D <-> 400D: 350D<->400D
some improvements are:
- 10 MP
- dust removal system
- only one display, improved in size
- some nice features like the display turns automatically off when you put your eye to the viewfinder :))

The whole 400D review is here: 400D Review
Prepare for a looooong review! :))

Go ahead and accept the offer without any regret. I just got mine a few days back and i also compared it to 350 D before buying 400D.It is better in everyway albeit by a small measure.

Not sure why the insurance company would buy you a 400D and not a 350D.

Does the insurance company actually buy a new camera? or write a check? If the insurance company writes a check, think about spending a little extra for a 30D.

I upgraded from 350D to the 400D, and I love it.

Bingo...

Ask if they will give you the value in cash/cheque as you would like to put some more cash towards an upgrade...

i really like the 400 more than the old rebel, the dust removal (esp cuz I go to africa) is amazing!
the 2 extra megapixels aren't bad and I hardly use my 30d anymore either, the only draw back compared to 30d is that it is slighlty slower fps but same as 350 You will like it, the body is smaller tho, you may want to go and hold one to feel the difference.

If you get the 400D and don't like it as well as the 350D, sell it on eBay, buy a 350D and spend the difference on a new flash or something. It is a win-win any way you look at it.

Got my new 400D today. Love it. Unfortunately insurance bought the camera so I couldn't go to the 30D.
Did not even take a photo yet with the 400D. Looks very nice though.

Well, you will benefit from the robbery as the 400D is an improved version of the 350D. Although they are basically the same camera, Canon just restyled the 350D design to face the Sony A10 introduction into the market.

If I had to buy a second hand DSLR camera in that range, I would buy a cheap 350D. If I had to buy a new camera, I would buy the 400D instead.

Main advantages of 400D over 350D (none of them important):
- 10Mpx vs 8Mpx sensor. That provides 11% more effective sensor area.
- Cleaning system. IMHO more a marketing strategy than anything real. Putting my 350D in clean mode and blow it with a pear, has always solved all my dust problems. And I am afraid that ultrasound shake cannot improve blowed air.
- Wider and brighter display. I think this is quite OK for comfort.

Main disadvantages of 400D (and it's not important):
- The little LCD display on the 350D is missing and was very useful to quickly and with a low battery consumption check main camera parameters at a glance.
