i don't want to be a whiner and stuck up but i think i should have gotten better than 150th. anyone agree or disagree?

I totally agree: your shot is great! Shots like this normally score 6.5-7.5 I think. Don't know what happened here. Maybe someone who didn't like it can give some hints?

Your image is very nice and got a lot of higher scores, I think what you have to realize is that in a free study people are really bringing out their best and everyone has to fall somewhere on the scale. I don't think it was so much a matter of you image being bad, it just had so many to compete against. It could also be a subject that some just don't like.

It really is a nice image.

The shot did average a 5.9/7 so

I guess everyone believes that they or someone else should be getting ribbon:
thread

My opinion on Free Studies is that there is going to be a LOT of really good pictures submitted. Unfortunately for most of us, there is a lot of really GREAT pictures submitted too. Personally I gave this a 6 which seems to be in line with the average you got. Again, this a good image (hence a 6) but perhaps not a great one.

Don't fret, it was a good shot.

Free Study is a hard nut to crack. Every voter has their fav type of shot and with such a choice, to score at 5.9 is no mean achievement.

Take heart from this and work on the next challenge entry.

At least one of us can read...I think. :)

I can give you a couple of possible reasons why people could take some point off:

I think DOF is a bit too small, the whole head should have been tack sharp for this type of shot

the composition is a little awkward, it's hard to tell which way his neck is bent.

And then there is an overall brownish color cast to the photo - probably it was just the dominant color of the scene, but it also leaves an impression of slightly skewed white balance.

I hope it helps. This is a nice image, and a pretty good score (mine fared only marginally better, if it is any consolation :))

Don't fret because it cane in 150th. The 5.99 (call it a 6) is your 2nd highest score ever. Be proud of THAT.

P.S. It IS a very nice shot....congrats.

Don't feel too bad. With the caliber of competition in the Free Study and a 1 to 10 scale for rating the differentiation between scores can be pretty small. Look at how close the histograms are for 100th, 150th(yours), and 200th place.

Keep up the good work!

Well, actually if you see that you finished in the top 70% of a Free Study you must be proud of it... Almost everyone submit for a free study, and they submit their best pictures of the month (not my case, I always submit experiments... but well)...Having a better picture than the 70% of the challenge is great!

Depends on the challenge. That photo could have scored what you said if the challenge theme was more specific but since this was a free study it's up against all kinds of subjects and styles not to mention better photographers. Not every challenge gets the best of the best like the free studies attract.

Btw, only 7 people gave that photo less than a 5 vote (all 4s). That's impressive, a hallmark for a much higher scoring image. It was just up against tougher competition than usual otherwise it would have scored much better.

photographically speaking it's excellent. The lighting and details are well captured. If your lizard's tongue was caught in motion, you get a 6.6, if it has a fly getting tagged, you get a 7.4.

I took a pic of some picnic tables in the snow for this challenge - I personally don't think I'll ever get near the top on a free study because my images are more personal for free studies I think - much like your is. It's pretty nifty and definitely has the effect of begging the view to touch it.

edited because I have no idea what i'm talking about :0

I scored this shot a 6 in the challenge, which seems to be in line with your score. Some things that could have been improved upon,(all my humble opinion) may have been a deeper depth of field. The texture is what I love about this shot and more depth would have allowed the user to have more in focus texture to look at. The shot abruptly goes out of focus, and maybe bumping up the ISO and using a deeper depth of field would have softened the OOF areas. I think one of your image's strength is the fine details in the scales and eyes, but your file size is only 103 kb and you can use up to 150 kb. This may have strengthened those details, especially the slight jagged edges around the iris of the eye, and bumped your score up.

I went and looked at this red ribbon shot from the Textures challenge and I tried to see why it did better. It has a tighter crop to focus attention on what's in focus and would make the head of your dragon seem larger and the backgound complements the skin of the dragon's. But all that stuff I said earlier about DoF field seems to hold no water, LOL.

similarly, I was a little disappointed with my finish...just one comment (thanks pineapple) which doesn't help much. anyone got any more suggestions? I'm guessing oversharpening for one, but really not sure.
Thank you!

I think there's another factor. . .I'm learning alot today about that intangible factor of people just getting the heebie jeebies over something that's not beautiful.

I had a picture of a lizard once that I thought was pretty good, but it only scored 5.9 too.

I think it's that some people just hate lizards and snakes (and big-nosed ladies with cigarettes :)

It's a beautiful image. Free Studies are tough challenges to get high scores in. You sort of have to hit people over the head with something that screams "WOWOWOWOW". This is quiet beauty.

Good technically, but that's about it. At 5.9 it scored higher than it deserves in my opinion.

It's nice to go through the month's pictures and see what's best.

If you're looking to compete with other entrants, the you have to be prepared for those who

a) have better equipment than you
b) have more time than you
c) have more experience and knowledge than you of:
c.1) photography and
c.2) digital image processing, not to mention
c.3) dpc challenges
d) have a studio
e) live in a more photogenic environment than you
f) got lucky
g) have a really good-looking spouse, friend etc.

What's worse is that there's a whole lot who have all the list.

I actually chickened out of voting on free study because of the phenomenally high standard. My entry rolled in around 330th. It's pretty, but too much of a wallflower to make itself noticed. No problem.

The lizard picture is good, especially that colourful and pin-sharp eye. Problems in the dpc context or generally would be in that only about 20% of the whole image surface is in focus, which makes for some dead space, in addition to which those reptiles stay still and make good close-up models, so we've seen quite a few similar shots.

No reason to beat yourself up, but a reason to kick yourself behind and get better.
