You should both shoot the pooch. Then you can "debate" who is the better photographer...

Hey guys,

Just a quick question: does a portrait shot necessarily imply that at least the full face must be visible in the picture (vs. for example, eye/nose/cheek shot)?

Thanks

You need a quick shutter to catch a bunny:

Nikita goes wheee! over this challenge:

I've been hoping for another pet portrait challenge ever since I joined the site. Here's hoping I'll get a good one this weekend (only time when I have the light to take half-decent photos)

I certainly hope not. Doesn't say anything about it having to be a studio pet portrait. I would think this would be a case where an outdoor portrait would be quite fitting.

I think voters will respond to fresh, clever ideas since pets are so easy to take as "snap-shots".

There were a lot of outdoor shots in the first Pet Portrait challenge.

Edit cause I'm dumb :P

You know there is a strong cat bias when dogs dominate a pet challenge even though dogs are far and way easier to shoot than cats.

Or it could mean that people just got better shots of dogs since they're easier to shoot. Does easier mean it should score less? A good shot is a good shot no matter how many seconds or days you spent getting it.

I really like this cat portrait

Of course I'd have to go to Tuscany, find a ruined abbey, convince two cats to sit still on a stone altar, while I set up a view camera, flexed the film in a special holder and used a split focus lens, while having the talent of Keith Carter, to recreate it, but I still like it.

I'm not making this assumption based on the ribbon winners or those that finished immediately below them because as you said, a more managable model will allow you to do more. What I'm referrring to is when you get passed those with elaborate setups and the shots become much more similar. For example, there were a lot of simple headshots entered and when you look at the ordering in which the dogs and cats finished it's almost all dogs followed by all cats. Granted there are a few that intermix in the order but it's as if the cat has to do something extra special to jump ahead of the dogs.

Anyway, just an observation. This is no different than the biases that exist with everything else. For example, a shot of hummingbird even if it's blurry and not that great is much more likely to outscore that of a pigeon regardless of quality of that shot. I understand why that happens I just don't understand why cats are deemed the "pigeon" and the dogs "hummingbird" when voting on them.

Omg.....I thought I was going to fall off my chair laughing!!! These shots should be on a calendar!! There are still tears coming down my cheeks while I'm typing this. Try typing while laughing so hard that you can't see the screen!

Thank you for this chuckle. It made my entire day!!!
