OK. I try to comment on every photo I vote on (and thus I don't vote on every entry).

But it's kinda pissing me off that SOME people go thru and mark every positive comment as helpful and ignore the comments with any constructive criticisms. Some photos I've gone to give 3 or 4 positive things and 3 or 4 negatives (room for improvements). Yet they find comments like "Good shot" and "nice light" helpful, but not the ones that are true feedback.

In essence, I've wasted my time for these people.

And for those of you who want a real critique on your entrys, get the aforementioned people to withdrawl from competition so those of us who do give feedback can give it to those who care for feedback.

A very good post. The double spacing between paragraphs really helps split up the thoughts. However, your post would be better if you didn't start the last paragraph with "And".

(BTW, I agree fully with what you said.)

I'm one of those people who marks every comment as helpful. There are people who don't mark any comment as helpful at all. I guess they have their reasons for that.
I mark all mine as helpful for two reasons. First of all I mark them so that whenever I look at my pic again I can see which are the new comments.
Secondly, I tick them because someone has made the effort and taken a little time to write their opinion about my photo. So in a way all comments are helpful to me, because it is someone's opinion, even if it is "nice pic" because I know they liked it, or "doesn't meet the challenge" because they didn't understand it.

But I've never really considered myself being annoying because I do that. Sorry if I annoy you by ticking all my comments as helpful.

I don't think marking everything as helpful is what he is complaining about (or at least that is not what I read into it.)

I think what he means is people who mark "Nice" as helpful but "There is a bit of graininess in your image which could be fixed using NeatImage and your subject is too centered. Consider applying the rule of thirds to improve you photograph." is not considered helpful.

Oh, thanks. (Kicks himself for speed reading the first post) :-)

You haven't wasted your time. Maybe you have if your objective is to collect 'helpful' votes. If your objective is to learn by commenting, nothing is a waste of time.

I tick the ''this comment was helpful'' IF i find the comment helpful.
for example if the comment is about the Photo. What i Dont find helpful is comments like - ''does not meet the challenge'' that does not tell me anything about the photo itself.

No, it's those who mark all "pat on the back" photos as helpful and ignore those "you could do this differently..."

It's not annoying, to me, that you tick all comments helpful.

I have a decent skill at commenting. I have little skill at refraining from commenting!!

I comment only to help the photog, not to help myself (though it may). I find it insulting when I review a photo (to see what other comments were made or to refresh my memory on what I commented) and all 'nice' comments are marked helpful, but my long, thoughtout comments are were intentionally glossed over.

It really, really upsets me. If you just need some pats on the back, then go to your spouse or pet, but don't come here. This place is for those who want to practice and get better.

'nough said??

Sorry for commenting again Kiwiness, I didn't all the posts. Perhaps I should read the whole thread before chirping back in. :)

...and then you have the people that will actually e-mail you back to tell you how much they appreciate your comments. I don't always get a chance to thank the people that thank me ;)

I am one of those who click all comments as helpful simply because someone took the time to look at my image and comment on it. Most of us do not have the time to comment on all photos, and I know that......so this is my way of saying "Thank you!" The new people on this site may not be comfortable in getting "wordy" and may simple say "nice photo" - in the beginning especially - but the fact that we clicked that comment as important to us does get noticed by them, and they feel appreciated. And they are.

Thanks for teaching me as much as you people have in less than 2 months. And I think the comments are the ultimate one thing that makes me think twice about what I have done, even the most irritating ones. I feel I have just produced a picture that I will enter into the winter Art Show up here in Ma. My pics get accepted but I have not won an award yet. I’ve done it all with my paintings. Best of show, first place, many ribbons, But Now that I have taken up photography it, with your help, seems possible to accomplish similar results. I still have a long way to go, but I just wanted to say- Thank You.

Best of luck to you. I suspect you will do as well with camera as with brush given time. An artist is an artist.

John do you have any of your paintings online?
10/22/2003 07:49:02 PM · #17
No I do not have any paintings online. I will sometime get around to taking Digital pics of some so I can show you all. I’ll need good lighting for this; I’ll try by this weekend. The last three weeks have been tough, my wife went in the hospital for some radical stomach surgery, and it was touch and go. She’s coming home tomorrow and she comes first. She is the Lady in my Nostalgia entry, Memories. And she did not have to act, that is her beautiful face. Also it is her hand in my Ironic entry, Dolphins. She said,” Life is so much fun with an artist.” After my Nightmare entry Bye, Bye, my entries have gone down hill, because of her being in the hospital and my endless worries for her. Thanks again, and thanks for this site that helped me the last few weeks. There’s more but I think I’ve said enough.
