I believe the bandwidth issue aplies to the client not the server. Large numbers of images make it slower for those international users still on dialup.

schweet.

in the "old days" dpc used to show your most recent challenge entry under your username. i really miss that.

i was told that it was taken away to reduce the traffic hit.

I have to say that this improves DPC 1000%.

Although having been here "many" years now I recognize many user names, it's just so more PERSONAL with user photos.

I hope the extra load isn't affecting the performance; it would be great to see this built in so everyone could use it and the performance would be optimized at the server level.

Thanks again!

Been running it for two or three days now. I have to say, I really like it! I can tell who's posting without even looking over at the left-hand pane.

Jeff you are doing a wonderful job with the Mods. They bring life to the threads. It's nice seeing the profile picture of the poster. There is however one thing I want to know if you can do with a mod. How about putting the the posters "Average Score Received" and "average score given" under their picture. I have looked at the threads and there seems to be room without making the post larger.

Can that be done and if so what do people think. Good or bad idea?

Depends if you are trying to be divisive and cause trouble, or not. If the aim is to shame people who vote differently, I think it is a great way to enforce a group-think approach to art.

This would require calling the profile page and parsing, which would inflate profile views AND severly impact server performance which Jeff is not (nor should anyone else be) willing to take part in. He's expressed being willing to create mods if they are able to be done using data already existing on the page.

Hey Scott,

I don't think it's a particularly bad idea. It's be nice to be able to customize what information you see about a user. But like Eugene said, in a client-side JavaScript you can really only work with the information that's already there on the page.

I'm not terribly concerned with artifically inflating the profile views - it's just a stat. But I am concerned about needlessly overloading DPC's servers, and grabbing the profile of each person in a thread would be excessive.

Cheers,
-Jeff

Bad idea, what good would it do? Why would you want that under every profile image? It just would cause more division and name calling and stuff like that. If someone wants to get that information, they can easily get it without it being posted over and over.

Update: version 1.5 (and version 1.1 for IE) now shows profile images in the comments section under your photos. The comments are just like forum threads, so they should have the images, too. =)

Download it from my mod page!

I've also received a couple PM's with people having trouble with the scripts. If you do have trouble or find a bug, please do the following first:

- Visit my mod page and make sure you have the latest version.
- Make sure you've uninstalled the old version before installing the new version (details on the page).
- If this doesn't solve the problem, send me a PM.

Cheers!
-Jeff

It's a brilliant mod, but now i've switched to Opera, is it possible to get it working with Opera?
Forums look bland without it, :(

You may not be, but as the "owner" of my profile, I don't want my profile view stats affected by someone reading my forum posts. I want that stat to indicate how many times people intentionally came to see my profile, not how many times somebody refreshed a page using a non-standard site feature.

I don't think it's "fair" to be doing things that inflate that view without the general membership of the site knowing it. If the site admins approve of it, they need to either modify the code that generates that stat or they need to make an announcement to the general membership that the "profile views" stat is now a useless piece of information.

PS: I hope this post doesn't come across as provocative or overly argumentative - I know this is something a lot of folks really like and I respect their wishes on that. Just getting my opinion out there.

I have installed Firefox 2.0, GreaseMonkey Extension, and attempted to download the DPC Keyboard Voting v1.2 script. When I do I get this yellow bar across the top of the page with the GreaseMonkey icon on the left and an install button on the right. When I try to click install it does nothing. The page shows me the script only.

Am I doing something wrong? Help please.

Thanks in advance.

i dont think so because its erroring on me too

Hmm - I looked through some forums discussing this. Two suggested fixes:

Try clicking the monkey icon in the lower left to disable (he frowns, icon goes black/white), then click again to re-enable GreaseMonkey (he smiles, icon in color).

If that doesn't work, uninstall GreaseMonkey (Tools->Add-ons, select GM, click uninstall), then install the older version of GreaseMonkey at this link:
//addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/downloads/file/13931/greasemonkey-0.6.8.20070314.0-firefox.xpi

After installing, make sure GM is enabled (smiling, color Monkey icon). You will probably need to reinstall all your GM scripts.

Let me know if that helps.

Cheers!
-Jeff

Hi Jeff - I did get it to install but i get an error on every page I go to and an error every time I vote. If I go into the FF error log it will show me error every time I go to a page and for every vote. Did I install it incorrect?

Odd. PM me the error messages (try looking in tools -> error console) - we'll get it worked out. Maybe with all the trouble it's been installed twice.
