I have a Nikon D70. My lenses are nikor 35-70 and 35-135. I want a macro and a longer lense, 200 or 300mm. Any suggestions for a good quality, but not too expensive lense? Sigma? I am not in a hurry as I am still working on getting good shots with what I have. Also, I think a fixed instead of zoom will help me get sharper focus ( plus a tripod, yikes!). Opinions?? Suggestions??

Look Into this lens or the non-VR version. For macro research the 105mm 2.8.

for a macro lens, both IreneM and i are having a great time fighting over dominance of the tamron 90mm macro lens but several people have said nice things about the sigma 105mm...

for the telephoto, if you're wanting "not too expensive", Nikon has a new 70-300 VR lens out for around $500 that you might want to look into...

Thanks for the suggestions. I LOVE the macro shots on DP. I always look at the camera and lens info if given. I have been seeing the 105mm a lot. Now to ebay...

I have the Sigma 105mm macro and it's tack sharp. The only thing missing to make it perfect would be internal focussing. If you,re looking for that then I'd suggest the Nikkor 105mm micro.

I have the 105mm Nikon Micro or "macro" if you feel!

For macro it is very nice. Check my portfolio for some shots. Also, if you are thinking about the VR for macro work, IMO it is not worth the extra cash. Macro shots with that lens is a game of millimeters. I find that my main issue is "not being in focus" ...either too close or too far from subject at the time the shutter is released...

...the VR will not help you with that problem !

I picked up the 105mm off ebay for about 1/2 the cost of new.

If you want to just try your hand at macro, a less expensive alternative is a set of extension tubes. I have the kenko set for Canon and they suit me quite well. They also come in handy for decreasing the minimum focus distance on long tele lenses.

I'd vote for the Sigma 105. There are a number of great macro shooters here who use it. Take a look at Ursula's work.

Thanks for the help. Ursula's photos are one of the main reasons I want a macro! I always look at the info under the photos to help learn - lighting,lenses,PP.... Thank you.
